edge questions

with my DE 338 edge shooting 250gr hornady SST's at 3250 fps it still has 2730 ft-lb at 600 yards and at 1000yrds still 1636 ft-lb

the rifle is the Canyon Rifle from www.DefensiveEdge.net

the ideal load is the 300gr SMK and has the greatest BC.s

so looking at moving to edge and i have 2 questions

1: hitting force at distance 600+ with 200 220 250gners
2: barrel length

thanks

lucas

1. what is your intended use? at 600 all of these bullets would kill deer sized animals with ease. The 300grain SMK and new Berger bullet seem to be the 'standard' bullets.

2. again...what's your intended use? A 34" barrel would certainly get all the possible performance out of the cartridge, but would be too long for a carry-gun.

At 600+ yards it will be just a tad better than the 340 wby and the same as the 338 ultramag and 338 lapua. Also it will be not nearly as good as stuff off the 378 wby and full length 416 rigby case. I have seen over a hundred 338-300 ultramags that some call an edge chronographed and never seen one aproach 3250 fps with a 250 grain bullet. Super fast rifles do exist way out of the norm but expect more like 3100-3150 fps tops. LTLR on here gives realistic unbiased average velocities all the time on big 338's. He would be your best scource since he was probably the first one to develop this cartridge and produce it in quantity back in the 90's and will give unbiased data since he doesn't have a dog in the fight.

Most Canyon Rifles have a 30" tube and getting 3250 with the 250 gr bullet is pretty easy. I too have chronographed 100's of 338 Edges. If your using a 26" barrel breaking 3200 is really tough 3150 is alot more in line.

Shawn,
I have a Edge with a 30" barrel. Could you point me in the right direction for a powder to use to work up to 3250 fps with a 250 grain bullet.

Not all 250 gr bulets are the same but most guys are doing it with H1000.

Thanks Shawn.

Will give it a try.

May also try Retumbo but I think it may be a bit too slow burning. Might run out of case capacity before I get to 3250 fps.
