I just bought a new rifle for Elk. I bought a Tikka T3 Hunter in a 338 win mag and was wondering if anyone has used them for deer and how was the out come and what bullet you were using?

I use a 338 ultra mag with 225 accubonds and they work great but if you make a bad shoot you can ruin a lot of meet but other than that it drops them like a rock

I shot a whitetail buck last year with my .340 Wby at 160 yards. hit nothing but ribs and heart. damaged about a fist size amount of meat with blood shot, about a 2 inch exit. I was shooting 225 interlocks infront of 88.5 grains of RL 25. DRT doesnt do it justice, it straight monkey stomped him.

Great choice, excellent everything rifle. I have the same rifle in stainless. I shoot the 210 swift scirroco with a .507 BC at 3100 fps and the 225 AB at 2950 fps with a .565 BC I think. The 200-210's I don't need a brake but the 225 kicks enough for a brake. It is a very accurate rifle good for anything that steps in front of you. I always say you can always go deer hunting with an elk rifle, but don't go elk hunting with a deer rifle.

Hey guys,
New at this. 338 definitely great calibre. Shooting a 338/378 with a 40" barrel with 1 in 8 twist. Any of you had any experience with Vihtavouri powder in this class. Shooting 300 gr Sierra MK? Hope this is the right way to get involved in forums.

Thanks for the info and input guys. I usually shoot my 7mm mag with a Barnes tipped tsx. Great round but wanted a little more. Guess I got what I wanted.

gun)works fine if you can handle a 338.I used 225 gr Barnes.

I've loaded 73.0 gr of RL 19 with 225 gr Barnes and was happy with it.This is nearly a full-power load so start a few grains lower and see how it groups.gun)

I've killed two deer with my 338 Ultramag and the 225 gr Accubond at 80-100 yds. Both dropped like a stone. Maybe a little more damage and bloodshot meat around the hole than with smaller calibers but negligible. Take that 338 WM and slay some deer!
