I finally got my hands on a savage large shank long action! It is a blued action in pretty good shape. I wanted to find a stainless but couldn't. I'm going to be building the action into a self built custom 338/300RUM, with all the money I've spent on the other parts i want the action to be just as nice. I'm planning on have it timed and trued by fred at sharp shooter supply. However, i would like to have the action refinished - it has a couple spots where the bluing is wearing off, and i want a fresh look! what are my options and what would you guys recommend for refinishing the action?

thanks!

yeah but refinished how?
refinishing is completely new to me but there are lots of options all of which i know nothing about - hard crome, nickle, black nickle, bluing, parkerizing...

the barrel is a stainless super-match pac-nor, I'm sure I'll end up with a SSS recoil lug which is stainless as well

Well then, you could have the barrel and recoil lug bead blasted as well, or have them bead blasted and paint everything. Kinda depends on what you want it to look like.

I like a more subdued finish, you could have it all teflon coated (Shawn Carlock teflon coated my 338 Allen Mag and it would withstand a nuclear blast!), or get it melonite coated like the benchresters are doing to make the throat more erosion resistant.

Living on the ocean here in Alaska, even stainless will stain and eventually rust. SO I bead blast all my working guns and teflon coat. Been doing it for years and actually one can get stainless teflon coating!
