Hi all,
been awhile since I last posted.... anyway.... what is your experience
with thumbhole stocks? Do they really make a difference verses a factory
sporter stock? What are the improvments?

I handled one at the range and it felt comfortable and it seemed like it
would enhance control. Do you all say it makes for more consistant
shooting?

I've been using regular stocks for many years. When I first picked up my new rifle - a Remington 700 TH-LSS .300 wsm, I was kind of hesitate, but out of my surprise, it felt really good, it gave way better control and better grip. I'm very happy with my decision to go with thumb hole stock, and I wouldn't go back to normal stock anymore.

I agree. I must admit that I was a little leery when I purchased a custom 338 Edge with a thumbhole stock. But I like it.

A side story: A buddy that I shoot with told me that he absolutely hated thumbhole stocks and couldn't believe I bought one. Well when I let him shoot my EDGE I noticed his thumb in the thumbhole. After about 5 rounds I called him on it and he just grinned and said "Not too bad."

It's all personal preference in the end......but give one a try. That's the only way you will know for yourself.

I just sold my last thumbhole stock.
I just couldn't get into it for any field use.

However , I do like the vertical grip on the McMillan A series ; specifically the A3.

I really like the thumbhole stock for shooting off a bench, but not for a hunting rifle. They are awkward and slow for me to get behind. I would not walk around with one.

It's an extreme example, but no dangerous game rifle has a thumbhole stock.

Off a table, it is fine. I don't know about belly shooting, never shot prone with a thumbhole.

Good hunting, Tom

I've shot plenty of prone behind mine. I really like it. Never had the problem of getting a fast shot off either. Just like anything else, once I got used to it it wasn't an issue.

Thanks guys for all the input, it was really helpful. I hope I can find a
thumbhole with out all the fancy colors and lamination... like a regular
wood or walnut. I was think synthetic... from brownells, but that one
doesn't have the same configuration "thumbhole grip" as the one I
usually see.
