I am new here, Hi Guys!
I had a question for you. I have Rem 700 5r milspec.
It was .308. I had GA Precision re-chamber it for 300wsm. I had been thinking of re barreling it to 7mmx300wsm to take advantage of the high BC bullets.
I have a bunch of 300wsm brass.
whats the scoop on reloading 300wsm brass to 7mmx300wsm. Do I just use a 7wsm die with my 300 brass. I know the brass dimensions are a bit different.
Also Are there any real advantages to using 300wsm brass over the 7wsm?
Should I just suck it up and get new brass?
Any info would be great. Thanks guys
Jason

couple things to consider.

The 7WSM has proven to be a barrel burner while the 300 WSM has proven just the opposite and goes 2-3x the normal mag barrel life. We have tried them and shoot well but sure go thru barrels compared to the 300.

New barrel will be $500 installed.

Now BC will go from .66 area to .73 or .74

Add cost of dies etc?

Is that jump in BC really worth that much money at twice the rate of a 300 WSM. If so, go for it, if not then I would stay with the 300.

As for the conversion, you have two ways to go.

1. Straight 7 WSM, which is new brass and stock dies.

2. 7/300 WSM which is existing brass and custom dies.

Brass is cheap!

Thanks for the info.
No I don't think it is really worth it
This 300 wsm is over kill. I will probably go back to .308 when this barrel burns out.
My brother and I could nail anything with our .308's in the mtns of Colorado. If we could see it we could hit it. All this WSM seems to do is eat more powder.
I can get approx 175 rnds out of a pound of powder for the .308 and 100 for the wsm.
The 300 wsm is a bit more fun. those 200grain Matchkings kit hard at every distance. They have a plenty high BC too.
Note
I just harvested 4 deer this season with my 24" AR-15 with 65 grain GameKings. Every one said the .223 was too small. None of the deer made it 20ft.
I rechambered the .308 cause everyone said it was too small.
I think the .308 is plenty to hunt anything in North America.
Now I am scared to shoot anything with this 300 cause I don't want to destroy the meat.

Thanks for the info.

Try some barnes Tipped TSX in the 168 or Sierra 175s. Will not solve our saving money on powder issue, but definitely flat shooting and not destructive on meat.

do not count on that barrel burning out too fast. that is the big plus of the WSM right now. Friend of mine, took first this year at the 1K BR Nationals shooting a WSM with 4000 rds down the tube.

The neck on a 7WSM is a little shorter, the shoulder is moved up a bit giving the 7WSM a bit more powder room.
Not a whole lot of difference but enough to warrant the use of custom dies if you want to use your 300WSM brass necked down to 7mm

sunshynjunky;

Do you still have the bolt from the 308? I do believe the 300wsm bolt face will be larger. Going to a 7mm with a short action to take advantage of the longer bullets you might want to have a long action. I would stick with the 308.

GA Precision modified my existing bolt. I am pretty happy with this 300WSM it is crazy accurate and with heavy bullets the velocities are nice. 200SMK 2800 not a barrel burner and plenty of juice for long shots. It hits like a sledge hammer at 1500+ > I have never grouped that far but I know I can hit a 12" pumpkin! ( and a couple water mellons!)

7mm WSM brass new is only available in winchster. The 7mm-300WSM is a perfect combo especially for long range. Norma brass beats the hell out of win brass. Anybody have suggestions/preferences for dies to size down to 300WSM Norma to 7mm?

So, you already have your rifle converted to 300 wsm? Is it shot out already or your just ready for something new?

My winchester WSM action is actually longer than a remington short action. Its sort of a "medium length" action, specific to the WSM cartridge. Nice marketing trick, wouldn't you say? Introduce a "short action magnum" and then build rifles with a medium action....

The 7-300wsm is a good idea compared to the 7mm wsm if you don't mind the wildcat aspect. You'll need 7-300wsm dies - you can't just run 300wsm brass through standard 7wsm dies.

Another thought might be the 7mm rem saum. Its a little shorter for your remington action, longer neck and slightly more efficient than the 7wsm.

Here's the article from 6mmbr.com....

No, she's not shot out. Actually she's still a tack driver. The WSM fits fine in a true short action. That's weird that they would due the medium action receiver.
Its a fun project, thats the only reason for the inquiry. Also, I was spoiled with the low recoil and accuracy of the .308.
The recoill is more than I like. I am now thinking I will simply get a suppressor for the gun. I have a suppressor on my .22lr. Its fun. I hear that a suppressor is the best brake you can get.
I have heard that suppressing will mess with accuracy. I have not seen that at all. If it does it is at the benchrest level, you know, .003 off. I am making 2.25" groups with this gun at 400 (175gr SMK, 69gr Reloader19). And thats off a bipod, prone. I like it, I just want to lower the recoil. I am also into efficiency. I like the high BC's of 7mm's. Velocity is a depreciating commodity, High BC is like diamonds, it last forever ( or at least a few hundreths of a second! HAHA)
catch you later

If recoil is an issue now, don't expect a .284 bullet to solve it. I can't notice any difference in recoil between a .300 wsm and a 7wsm. Like you said, the suppressor (or brake) is probably the answer.

Anyway, I hope you like the article...
