I have a Sako M-995 TRG-S (300wm.)that I'm thinking about using for a project. It will be used mostly for deer, elk and long range fun. I will probably use a McM A-5 stock, change barrel.....would I be better off chambering for 7mm mag instead of 300 wm again? thanks for info, Soren

Hey soren

My favorite rebarrel for a 300 win mag is to a 6.5 rem mag. Same bolt face and the mags are always plenty long enough to seat the bullets way out

You could also rebarrel to one of the RUM's. I just rebarreled a 338 win mag to a 338RUM and have no feeding problems. There is only .001" difference in the case head and I didn't have to do any bolt face work. I do have to seat the bullets deep in the case to fit the mag though.

One caution on rebarreling the Sako; I rebarreled a Sako Model 75 in 270 win to a 280AI and had a minor problem with that 3rd bolt lug hitting the top of the next case in the mag at the case-body/shoulder junction when ejecting a round. Had to take a little off the bottom edge of that lug to keep it from hitting.

If it were me I would probably stick with the 300 win mag. If only beause you probaly already have a bunch of stuff for it.

No.

This would boil down to personal choice. I've owned both and still have a 7mm Rem Mag. I sold the 300 WM and went a bit larger. I now have a 300 RUM. But, there's nothing wrong with the 300WM.

If you choose to stick with the 30 caliber, I would suggest you take a long look at Obermeyer's newest 5R barrels. His 30 cals are .298-.308. I have one on a 308 win in 11 twist and it has really impressed me. It is on a Sako M591 LH action and a McMillan stock.

If you decide to go 7mm, then you'll have to see what Obermeyer offers if you want his bbl. Other than that, I'd go with a Kreiger, Hart, Lothar Walther, or Bartlein

Thanks for the info. As far as going bigger, Shawn C. is already working on a .338 Edge for me. I already have a nice .308 Win.(A-2,MKIV,Hart,..) and a .280 ack. imp....I suppose I'm not satisfied with an ok shooting gun after having some real shooters. I have been hearing more about people shooting the 6.5mm whether it's over a .284,7wsm, or a 300wm. The 300 wm is a great roung though.

Hi man,

I think your first thinking was right. Try a 7mm Remington Magnum.

The Sako TRG action is top. You can go with a cutting barrel from Krieger, 26 ic length allows you to extract 95% of 7RM power with a good balance and not too much weight. Go with one turn in 9 ic barrel I f you want to 160/180gr Bullet.

If you reload, you're going to discover what a 7mm RM can do (commercial load are unloaded for marketing trend RUM, WSM etc).

see you.
