Hmmmmm, cute;)

SMKs out of mine at 27xx FPS into an 8" wall of blow sand (very fine) at 200 yds penetrates about 5". A 3 shot group will pass through though, if the sand is at all moist.

The remains looks absolutely devastating, no fragmenting, just one heck of a hunk of shrapnel.

I only had 6 of the AL tips and loaded them so that a loaded round could be ejected. I don't know how far back they were. For all practical purposes, the single 3 shot group I shot after using 3 to get the correct powder charge, went just a bit bigger than what is expected of the SMKs. Just under 0.7 MOA @ 200 yds.

Average velocity for the 3 shot group was 2896 FPS with a bigger ES than I want. Was using US-869

I'll have 100 on the way next week.
 
I assume that the 180 grain will be the lightest 30 cal, if so how long is it and what is the absolute slowest twist @ 3000 fps that could be used?

Hello,

We have not shot them in anything slower than a 10" twist and they stabilize well in that twist. The bullet length is basically the same as the 240 SMK which has a BC of .711. Due to differences in the drag functions of the nose of the SMK as compared to the Georgia bullet, the Georgia version should have a higher BC. We will know for sure in the next two weeks or sooner.

I think there is a website out there that can calculate required twist based on some measurments. If anyone knows of it let me know and I will take the measurements and find out what the math indicates.

shot the 265's into some milk jugs/ thick magazines/ 2 x 6's lined up at around 300 yards. only shot 2. my test consisted of a 1/2" thick catalog, first gallon jug, a 2 x 6, 2nd jug, then another 2 x 6. i had quite a few items behind this but weren't necessary. the bullet was stuck in the 2nd board.

the second shot went through the above line-up, through the 3rd jug and stuck in the catalog behind the 3rd jug.

in both cases there was complete jacket/core separation with miltiple fragments. very similar to the 250 SMK's i tested last summer.

don't know the speed yet, was a very mild load of 81 gr of 7828. i'm trying to keep the velocites down to simulate distance hits.

next time i will get the 280's loaded and take the crono to get at least one velocity for each so we know about what speed we're starting at. will be testing in the 800 ballpark next weekend if the weather is decent.

the goal is to get enough of the same materials so i can have the same line-up of stuff for each test. the 2 x 6's are deffinitely harder on the bullets than even the phone books.

Hey Dave,

When you test the 280's, can you also fire some SMK's too so we can get a comparison? If you shoot the 250 SMK's for comparison, I will do some 300 SMK's beside my ALuminum 280's and we will have some pretty nice data to go off of between the two of us.

We finished the 30 caliber stabilization test today by shooting in the worst conditions that we have seen so far. We were not able to shoot this morning due to some local volunteer work and the bullet maker was anxious about retesting the pistol bullets (because my primer tool botched up the first tests) so we tested them at mid day with all the mirage and wind just to see if we could get them to stabilize. Since we were not shooting but two groups, we did not set flags up. We are at 92 feet above sea level and the following was observed:

--180 grain at about 2500 fps (45 grains of Varget) out of a standard 308 Wichita Silhouette pistol with a 10" twist, Nightforce 8-32 x56 scope, and Holland muzzle break........ All bullets stabilized into a group that could not be plugged by a .338 bullet. The actual group measured .0155". Absolutely the best group I ever shot with a pistol and the only group I shot with it today....... Who knows, I may quit shooting groups with this pistol...... These bullets shoot well in my specialty pistol down here at my altitude. However, your resulsts may vary based on your locale and weapon.

--212 grain at an arbritrary powder charge (78gr H1000) and seating depth (-.050" off the lands) yielded a tad under.375". Not bad for no load work up and a factory 300 Win Mag Sendero Special. I would consider these stable as well.

Testers note:

I have never seen a bullet that was so friendly to tune a load. Arbritrary powder charges and seating depths are yielding better groups with factory guns than some custom guns have after extensive tuning. They are very user friendly but they hate 2x6 boards.

The 180 BC should be very close to the 240 SMK, maybe even better.

This could be a real hit for the 30 caliber crowd if it performs as well as the others have to date. Sounds like it shot lights-out in your pistol with the 10 twist @2500 fps MV. Please update us on your rifle test results at higher MVs when those results are available.
