So I am getting a new Rem 700 VLS. I am looking some advice on where to start of loading. I shoot rockchucks 500 and under, mostly 300 and under, so I am thinking of using the 65 grain V-max and then Berger 105 for deer.

I thought about using Varget for the light bullets and H1000 for the 105's. Any thoughts or suggestions of powder choice?

What is a good primer to go with?

For cases I thought about just using Lapua.

Advice greatly appreciated.

srhaggerty..I've had VG success with 85gr speer bt's over 46gr IMR4831. They have a good BC and fly real good too. You'll have to have at least a 8 twist barrel for 105's I'd think. A 9 twist might do ok too. I'm shooting 105 AMAX in a 6br with varget and it is very accurate. Every barrel has it own likeing to powders bullets etc so you'll have to try different combos to see what it likes. Good luck.

im shooting A maxes with my 243 with IMR 4350 and am having good succsess (sp) I think h1000 might be a little slow

I thought so to, but it showed it. I wanted that one do to the temp consistency.

Looking at remington's website, my barrel is a 1:9 1/8" twist.

Your barrel might be right on the edge for the Amax, all you can do is try it.

Give H4831 a try with the Amax, it worked pretty well with the Amax in mine (1:8 twist), but not as well as Re 22.

I too am trying to get a good longrange 243 load. The rifle is a Rem. VLS with a PSS stock, and probably very similar to yours. As for the 105 gr A-MAX, I have found that 31 gr. Varget worked OK. It was on the lower end of the velocity though. 36.7 gr IMR 4350 was a very decent load. I tested some H4350 and found that 36 gr shot quite well also. I like the H4350 for the fact that it meters far better than the IMR, through your powder measure. I recently bought some 95 gr Berger VLD's and some 95 gr Sierra MatchKings. They look like awesome bullets. I wanted to try the 95 gr. because I have a sneeking suspicion that the 105 is too heavy for our factory barrels. Both bullets have good BC, with the berger coming in at a whopping .514. Sierra is down in the .480 range. The bullets are hard to find in the local sports shop, but midway sells them. I talked to both companys about loads, and each were very helpful. The Sierra with H4350 starts at 35 gr and maxxes out at 41.7 gr. The Berger starts at 36.5 gr and ends at 42.4 gr. Those are some wide ranges, but I loaded some up last night and am going out to try them today. I'll keep you posted as to how they perform.

my 243 likes the 107 smk over the load data for imr4064. It shoots a five shot group into the .2s. I have not messed with the 105 amax's enough yet to find a good load for it. Lapua brass was used and you can really tell the difference. Oldfamily.

H1000

Below is data compiled over 10 years with the 243 and H1000 powder & Federal GM 210 primers, brass was Win. and Lapua. I don't see where H1000 powder is too slow, and will extend barrel life to over 4000 rnds. with the correct cleaning regime, all bullets are naked.

107 Sierra

Short Range: 46.5 H1000, 2875 to 2900 fps, depending on the barrel. Less than 1/2 MOA accuracy.

Long Range: 48.0 H1000, 3000 fps +/-, depending on the barrel. Less than 1/2 MOA accuracy

115 DTAC (Last 2 years)All loads are 1/2 MOA accuracy or better.

47.0 H1000 2935 fps
47.5 H1000 2975 fps
47.5 N170 2960 fps
44.5 N165 2960 fps (most accurate)
