Anybody have problems shooting decent groups with vld's not touching the lands? Reason I ask is they won't fit in the magazine if I seat them to touch the land. I'm looking for an ultra long range bullet for my 300 saum.
Berger vld's .05" of the lands?

Another way to address the problem:
Normally, the top round in the magazine actually sits above the magazine body and can be loaded longer. Including the round in the chamber, you now have a 2 shot rifle. This is what I do with one of my LR rifles that is loaded .007" into the lands.

Funny you should say that. The rifle I was referring to is also a 7 STW. I was loading the 162gr A-Max which is also a rather long bullet. They shoot tighter groups when loaded into the rifling of my Hart bbl.

Good info and solutions to long bullets, but my question is still unanswered. Can vld's shoot good off the lands? Any info would be great.

You are asking a tough question... We don't know the habits of your gun..Mine shoots better the deeper they are... You might be lucky but you will need to test in in your gun.... and if they don't I will buy your bergers...

I am having the same problem as you are having. I have tried to load my 7MM SAUM with 168 Bergers and the mag is too short to load the bullets close to the lands. I have backed the bullets out so that the loaded round would fit the mag.. My Rem 700 did not shoot them quite as well as I thought it should. In fact my groups were not as good as the gun shot 140 Nosler Accubonds or 160 TSX bullets, so I am still trying by moving the bullets as close as I can then backing them out. I have not found the sweet spot as of yet.
VLD's
VLD's are always very finnicky. A few will shoot well off the lands, but most seem to do better into the lands. Currently, I am shooting just one VLD, the 80 gr. Berger in my competition factory Savage .223. It shoots best about .020 into the lands. You need to test OAL's by .005" increments. Start as long as possible, and go down. You might try single shot loadings with several jammed, as an experiment before making alterations to the magazine.

Took us a while to get good accuracy!
We ordered 30 caliber VLd's in 168, 190 and the 210's. We worked up loads for a 300 RUM and a 30-338...Finally got the 210's to shoot in the 30-338, but we had to come within .010 of the lands before we saw signs of real good accuracy. If you are going to keep the rifle then a call to Kevin Wyatt might help. Wyatt's Outdoor Custom Rifles - Magazine Boxes He can install one of his extended mag boxes for you...also feel free to email Walt Berger with your questions. He is a fine gentleman and will correspond usually within a day or so. He will also email you various loads to try...I think he generates them using "Quick Load" but am not positive. He can be reached at [email protected] keep working at it...they are very good bullets but must be seated and loaded properly for your specific rifle Good Luck! 30-338
