Help on caliber

Just buy a 28 Nosler, shoot 180-195-197s and leave all other calibers in the dust. The 30 cals can't touch that setup. Do the math. Best hunting caliber especially for long range. Completely insane ballistics
No, it is nothing like a 300RUM, 30-378, Warbird, or similar with heavy LD bullets. I have both. By the same token, the big cased 300's can't compete with the big cased 338's. And on it goes.

Well said. Looks like some of you are missing the point. For the time being, this will be the OP's only rifle. The only one he has to work up a load for, get the dope, hunt, practice, and just enjoy shooting. I will also add it needs to be affordable to shoot often. Most of us have a safe full, more than capable of overlapping duties. My wife accuses me of even having one for dragonflies, and she is not wrong. The perfect rifle for the OP is one that he can enjoy. Shoot often, hunt with and just enjoy shooting. He has elk on the menu. Top contenders that meet his needs are 280AI, 7RM, and 300WM. .338 is in there too, but just not as much fun to just play with. When he is more able to branch out and afford specialty rifles is when the others come into play. BTW, my answer would be very different if he had several rifles.

I don't know why you quoted me because I totally agree with you

Well unfortunately, your off on that. LB for LB the 28 beats the 300 RUM also using Heavy LD bullets. Even by using a 195 Berger EOL @ an easy 3125fps, it beats a 300RUM using 220ELDX @ 2910. 28-4228 ft lb vs 300rum - 4136 ft lb. Muzzle #'s mean nothing, its when these bullets get out to 300-500-700yds is when the 28 really separates itself from the cartridges you mentioned. 3262 vs 3030, 2725 vs 2434, etc.
Not only that, 25% flatter at 500 and climbs from there. Ive owned a Lazzeroni Warbird, hated it. If we are talking best production caliber for all around hunting and ballistics, its hands down the 28. If not the 28, id go 7mmRM and load em heavy.

At the end of the day it's whatever you can afford shoot accurately and comfortably," the flatest shooting hardest hitting Caliber made won't do you a darn bit of good if you can't hit what your aiming it at because your not comfortable shooting it for many different reasons ( I. E Recoil, sight picture, distance, etc etc)

Its a good thing that deer and elk dont read ballistics charts then.
Well a ballistic chart can easily show you how dumb some opinions are. That's like telling someone to go hunt with a .223 or .204 ruger, I bet you'll kill an elk with one. Doesnt mean its good advice... and then acting like ballistics don't matter because in the end, it killed the elk. This is a Long Range Hunting forum, not some backroad 300 yard chipper. All the 30-06 + .308 lovers for LRH are funny :)

Change the twist to 8 on the RUM, OAL to 4", and HEAVY VLD bullets. Then get back with me. Also your Velocity on the 28 is optimistic, and the RUM anemic. I have both of these. The RUM is a bigger hammer.

Im sorry but hunting elk and deer with a 30-06 is in an all together different league than a 223 or a 204. That comparason is just being dramatic. The OP sold most of his guns a couple years ago and is looking for a rifle. A 30-06 is a fine place to start re building a gun collection to hunt. So would a 300 Win mag or 7 Rem mag like i suggested. Is it perfect for long range. Absolutely not but it is a way more versatile cartridge than a 28 nosler will be for a 1 gun battery. Ammo cost, recoil, barrel life, enough gun to kill the selected species. Later on a 28 might be a good gun for him but that is definitely a niche gun.

Notice I said "Well Said"? I was complementing and agreeing with you...... That's the reason I quoted you. Want me to take it back???[/QUOT

No!! Lol! Sorry brother and thanks for that;)

Orange Dust,

I screwed up my response in the above. Sorry brother and thanks:)

The Velocity is not at all optimistic. 197s are running 3150 no pressure signs whatsoever. Not me, many other guys. Also, running a 4 coal with what, 230s-250s? Your talking Lapua Recoil and even then the 300rum Doesn't have a noticeable advantage. The bottom line is the 300rum isn't what it's all cracked up to be against the 28. Shoot the 28 smokes a 300 WM and asks for seconds. If you want to considerably stack against the 28, you have to go Lapua sized rifles. That's my point. For the amount of recoil and knockdown at distance...it's in a league of it's own.

Dude...a 270 is a better option over a 30-06. I'm obviously exaggeration on my point with the 204,223 but a 30-06 is Grandpas cartridge. It's long in the tooth and have seen many elk walk from it. It's kills, but so does a 204
