I have a 300RUM with a 30" Lilja barrel. I want to know what is the most accurate weight for a polymer tip bullet. I know the heavier you go the higher BC you get, but why are match bullets 168grains? Should I just go with a 165grain ballistic tip?

I have had good luck with the 165 Nosler Ballistic Tip using H1000. Give 'em a try.

"Why are match bullets 168grains?"

They aren't. 308 diameter match bullets come in almost any weight. Sierra makes 308 match bullets up to 240gr. Many shooters prefer the 200gr-220gr weight bullets for their 300RUM.

Most 168gr match bullets were probably made with the .308 Winchester cartridge in mind. With the huge case capacity of the RUM cartridges, I see no advantage to using the lighter .308 diameter bullets.

Just my 2 cents.

So I should go with a 200gr accubond over the 165gr ballistic tip for accuracy? Are they both equally accurate?

All cartrige's have an optimum load ( the best all round weight, velocity,
Ballistic coefficient/energy) with the 300 rum it appears to be between
180grs and 200grs, this does not mean that other bullets wont work but
may not utilize the cartrige's potential.

165 ballistic tips do work in place of 168 SMK's but were intended for
the slower 308 win.

The 165 will produce more velocity and less recoil but that's about
the only advantage in the big magnum.

I have 2 loads for mine they are the 180gr accubond (a little tougher than
the ballistic tip), and the 200gr nosler partition for the big stuff.

Just my 2 cent's

You should use 180 class bullets or bigger with the 300 RUM. Why? Because you have a ton of powder, take advantage of it and produce some energy. Also because after several hundred yards, even though the MV is slightly slower it will still yeild a flatter trajectory to 1,000 yards due to a higher BC with SOME 180+ bullets. Also at 300 RUM velocities anything less might not hold up good enough to deliver damage far enough into a big critter. You need more mass to get the bullet to the vitals. These are just a FEW reasons.

Also I have had great luck with the 178 AMAX, 180 AB and the 200 AB. I use the 178 for deer, sheep and black bears. The 180's and 200's for everything bigger. It depends on my mood.

300 Rum

I have found that 180 Grain Accubonds, 92-97 grains of RE 25, and FED 215M primers shoot extremely well. I have used this in my rifles and several of my friends as well. I have a Remington Sendero set up for this and can shoot MOA to 1k yards. Easily. As usual, start low and work up...etc etc etc.

The 300 RUM has enough powder capcity to take advantage of the heavier wieghts in 30 Cal. I am building a 300 RUM with a 30" ABS barrel 1 in 8 twist to shoot the Wildcat 265 grain ULD bullets. With a slow burning powder such as WC-872 or Hogdons US 869 I will be able to reach speed of 3000+FPS and have a bullet with a BC of .7 to .8 A heavy wieght such as this will have a tremdous impact potential when it encounters a game animal results should be spectacular..

I would not consider any thing less than 180 grains in a 300 RUM......

8 twist for 265 ULDs? Boy that will be a definite one bullet gun, hope they shoot.

I am sure that they can shoot them, just with that fast twist and RPM, I know most jacketed bullets will end up a little gray puff about 100-400 yards. Now the solid TSX should hold together and maybe the accuracy is acceptable with those RPMs.

Also I doubt 15 grains difference between a 265 and a 240 is going to even be discernible on the impact and expansion on the animal.

A one bullet gun can bite you sometime.
