Has anyone used these for actual hunting and what kind of performance did you get. Have a 7rum I was going to load up for long range shooting/hunting. I have the 150 sciroccos loaded for it now but just got a new CDL SS in the 7mag that I want to shoot the 150 scirocco in. My 7rum is a sendero. Also does anyone have load data for the 7rum and the 168VLD.

A bit off topic but how do you like the sendero in 7mm RUM?, did you get a brake fitted?

I havent ever shot them but I just watched a video called "how to shoot beyond beleif" which they used the 7mm vld in their 7mm mags. they showed the bullet going into layers of wet newspaper and cow bones with great results. the bullet did decinegrate but caused great wound channels and great penitration. I beleive these tests were done at 3-4 hundred yards. hope this help.

You need to get on the Berger website and watch the video of the game taken with there VLD's. My buddy saw a hunting show where a guy shot a Bear at 729 yd's with a 7mm 180 Gr and the Bear never knew what hit him, he never did see what caliber it was but he's sold on the Berger's. I'm going to shoot the 168's in my XP-100 7mm Lazz Tomahawk when i get it from Tanel in the next week.

I've got to order some 168's for my 7mm STW. I am working up a load for 150grn SMK but do not have as much info on them as a hunting bullet as I do on Berger. I don't have a local supply here in Houston, Texas so will need to order from somewhere on line.

Hello, I live in New Zealand and have just started using the 168 gr vld s for hunting in my 7mm/08 AI. I am shooting them at 2748 fps.
So far I have shot 4 goats and just a couple of days ago a workmate shot his first deer at 325 yds with one from my rifle.
3 of the goats dropped on the spot the 4th went about 10 yds with a lung shot. These goats where not big animals, around 80 lbs on the hoof. The bullets penetrated completely with exit holes you could poke a 1 1/2 inch stick into (I did)
The deer was interesting, The shot was at 325 yds and it was quite windy, the deer was facing left slightly towards us with wind from the right. I told Richard to hold a little behind the leg to allow for some wind drift. There was none! and the bullet hit the rear part of the lung punching through into the gut and ending up on the opposite side breaking ribs but not exiting. almost complete disintigration.
I was pleased. The bergers seem to perform as they state, with a delayed expansion of 2-3 inches penetration followed by rapid expansion. Personally I like a fairly rapid expanding bullet, They give a good visual indication of a hit.
I will continue to use them and keep add a post when I have shot some more deer (hopefully this weekend!)

i have a buddy that has shot the 168's out of his 7um and at higher velocity loads, they would disintegrate once in a while. he fixed this by only shooting low pressure type loads and got the same results.to my knowledge he never shot any big game with it, only shot groundhogs. to say they put a hurtin on them would be an understatement! personally i think the 180 is a better choice for big game, especially if you're shooting long range. i only shot 180's and 200's out of my 7um. could shoot the 180's around 3250.

I'm shooting 168 VLD's out of a 300 win mag. Shot 2 muleys 50 and 300 yds. and a bull at 500 yds, all high shoulder shots and none of 'em took a step. I'm sold on vld's.

Isnt 168 kind of heavy for calibre? Ideal for 7mm is 139-140. 168 seems more like it otto be for 30 cal long range shooting. I am shooting 139gr Hornady SST with good results on paper. Huntign season looms so Ill see how they work on game. But I am always on the lookout for bullets that will shoot flatter.

I could not agree more with Frank21, the 160gr up bullets are superior for long range shooting because of the B.C. advantage. The 139gr SST you speak of has a B.C. of .468 the Berger 168gr VLD has a B.C. of .643 and the Berger 180gr VLD is .684 a vast advantage. the 139sst's are fast and flat at close to medium range but pale in comparison at long range.

p.s. "calibre is normally a frenchie or Euro term, in America it is caliber, but then again they just changed the name of the mall down the street to the "Town Centre". guess it sounded more elegant than town center.

I've been busy with other stuff and didn't have the time to go into the in depth answer that you just gave.
Back many years ago I thought the same thing when a person is used to medium range, medium weight bullets seem to fit the bill much better. But for long range SD and BC all come into play as well drag and a few other things.
