I have a Encore with a custom barrel 22" in 6.5X284. Loaded 50gr. R-22, 140 SMK's,Fed 210M goes about 2700fps. I then tried 50gr/H4350.140 Horn SST goes about2830. Very hot flat primer but barrel is opening fine. I know these are max loads but shouldn't it be faster? I would like not to be at max but still should be around 3000. Is the short barrel hurting me that much?

I can't hit 3000 fps with a 26" barrel, unless I want to hammer the bolt open /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, most of my loads run 2920-2950 and those are max.

27.5" (70cm) Lothar Walther
139gr Scenar 0.02" from lands
Vihtavuori N560 54.2gr, Federal 215 primer

This gives me a consistent 3050 fps +- 6 fps with no pressure signs at 32*F 300ft alt. So yeah, barrel length seems to do it.

I,m shooting 140 amax out of a 26 " barrel at 2910 ft/s .will give some norma mrp a try if I can get hold of some.

Krieger 26 inch SS Barrel, .291" neck, 140 grain Berger VLD, 49grain H4350 = 2900 fps.

I think barrel length is the key to extracting velocity from this cartridge, I believe that using the same load, but with a 30 inch barrel 3000 fps is attainable.

So long as it is accurate, is there any need to get your bullet going as fast as possible?
