Sub Sonic load for 308?

FYI, in the 8/13 issue of American Rifleman, it was stated that Bill Ruger used 8 grains of Clays behind a 168 A-Max for 908 fps. Shot pretty well in my nephew's 308 Ruger. As in 1 1/8" at 100 yds.
Best of luck find a load that works.

I use trail boss in 6.5 wanna be more with 140's. Works perfect and holds 1-1.5" 100 yd groups. This is from a compass that only shoots that size group with full loads.

Does anyone have a sub sonic load for a 150 to 168 gr bullet in 308 Win?
Try Hodgden powders web site, I believe the powder for reduced loads is H4895, anyway check there first. 2400 and 4198 for all lead bullets in 30 cal.

Trail boss is my go to powder for light loads.

I love TB, but be careful with it because man it can get spooky. I was shooting 125 gn and 150gn SSTs from a 30-06 with TB, same starting charge behind each bullet and the 150gn shot 450 FPS faster.

I still have the ammo box sheet and notes from that session, I keep trying to convince myself that I got the 125s and 150s mixed up but I loaded more of one than the other and all the other loads shot as expected. That was a very not-gentle reminder about keeping one set of components out at a time, nothing centers the mind quite like touching off a 30-06 expecting a gentle puff but getting a decent bang out of it.

I load Subsonic in 308 using everything from a Round Ball for small game, weighs about 43 grains, to 130 and 150 grain spire point bullets. The round ball losses velocity rapidly after 40 yeards making them much safer than even a 22LR for grouse, squirrels and the like. The lighter bullets we use on Varmints and they perform much better to 200 yards than the heavy bullets do, don't destabilize in a normal twist barrel and are easy to come by. All are loaded from 850-1050 FPS depending on use, all using Trail Boss.

Round Ball load out of the 308 at 20 yards. Two different loads of Trail Boss Left group is 5 shots, right group is 3.

Ok we need more details on that. I'm walking to the shelf to grab some 308 cases as you type.....
If you are talking the round ball loads, they are made by neck sizing a case, putting in a starting load of 3.5 grains of TB, then seat the ball into the neck half way down the ball. The balls are Hornady pure lead Buckshot. #1 is .30, I use single 0 and swage it down to .311 in a simple die that I got with a Hammond Gamegetter. (The GameGetter is a neat rig but iti is fiddly to load follow up shots. It is why I started loading the round balls direct into cases http://gamegetter.ca/operation/instruction.html).

Bottom picture is a bunch of loaded round ball loads ready for small game hunting.

8 gr Titegroup with a 168 SMK gives 1080 fps according to the Hodgdon manual. 8 gr Clays gets 1060 fps with the same bullet.

7.6g Trail boss
PPU cases
150g Hollow nose lead cast
Fiocchi LR primers
COAL 2.530"
These shot well and were quite accurate.
I tried them on a couple of big old billy goats a few weeks ago at about 30 yards. The terminal performance left a lot to be desired so I won't be using them again as hunting rounds.
