SCOPE RETICLE

Would someone expain to me what a VRC reticle is. The one I saw was on a Simmons Pro 50 scope and it looked like an extra horizontal line about crosshairs.

"The 808820 and 808825 feature the VRC (variable range converter) reticle system. The reticle accurately provides the distance to your target: simply rotate the power ring until the animal's body is bracketed by the two horizontal crosshairs."
