its not me that i worry about with texting, inReach would have been fine for me-- as i noted above, we are communicating daily with people at home on updates of condition of relative in the hospital-- the people we are communicating with back at home are not tech savvy, there is no way they would be able to comprehend how to use a web page to send a text, and wont call or text to an international phone number due to rates--- we needed a simple solution for them to just pick up their phone and call us, and the ability to pick up the phone to call them for updates alsoThis is who i use for SAT phone rental in the past. Simple and affordable. Mostly just use my Garmin inReach to text message. Honestly cohunt, if you can use two features on your smartphone, you can use the inReach without issue, its that simple.
and yes you can rent a garmin inReach, but the cost for a rental with a reasonable number of texts over a 10 day period comes to $100+ -- the phone is only going to cost me $150 after i get the deposit back--the inReach still uses a web page to text as it is on the same satellite irridium network (so its still using an "international" number on the same network)---- the inReach would have been fine for me (as I only intend to use my phone in an emergency or to communicate with my 1/2 way tech savvy wife) but it definitely would not have been an option for her to communicate with our non-tech savvy people at home
