RL-33 Load Data

Just a quick update.....I found the "end" with my 300 wby tube that LOVES Retumbo...(see earlier posts) I hit the wall at 93 grains. Got the hitch at the top of action stroke and had shiny ejector marks..... I won't go there again. I also had a sub 1/2 group at 300 yards!!! Unfortunatly, I didn't have my chrono set up...to much work seting it up in two feet of snow. I will crono the 91 grain load in the basement next chance I get. The groups were not steller at 91, but at least I will have a base line.

Anyone using it in their Edge/Lapua yet. Just got my new Edge up and running. Going to test H1000 to the end and maybe tinker with retumbo and RL25/33.

Another RL-33 test. Latest project is a 375 Ruger necked down to 7mm. Shoulder is NOT bumped back like the LRM. Neck is short but shoots fine. Reamer is a PT&G with .317 neck throat is .166" necks are turned to .013" for .0035" bullet release per side.

Waiting on a 30" tube, I decided to rechamber a 7 Rem Mag barrel. This barrel is a rem takeoff shortened to 23 1/4" so the shank could be threaded for a Mark X. I know this short barrel won't optimize performance but I can get a feel for what the case likes and fireform all the brass.

moly coated 180 Berger VLD with RL-33

81 gr 2950 fps
82 3005
83 3040
84 3077 most accurate
85 3120
86 3145 accuracy fell off

I think I'll run the 84 gr load and have some fun shooting this short barreled 8 1/2 lb rifle at LR targets and a few jackrabbits.

Will be using RL-33 with longer barrel and the newer 180 hybrids soon.

Should be a screamer with the 30 " barrel!.......Rich

Yes Rich it should be interesting. Have messed with many of the 7mms and liked the opinion of the guy that created the 7mm practical. I liked everything but the longer cartridge. Always thought the 7mm Dakota was a great idea except for the cost of brass and a larger bolt face.

When I get to shoot the 30" barrel I'll post here.

I know what you mean about the Dakota. That is why I built my 30/375 S.I. and I love it! Same capacity as the Dakota.......rich

Here ya go, it is also on post 99

I tried RL-33 in a 7 rem mag:

24" Rem barrel, moly coated 162 A-max seated .010" into rifling.

Original load: 72 gr of Retumbo 2975 fps

RL-33:
starting load 76 gr vel 2837
worked up to 79 gr for vel of 3000 for very small gain over Retumbo
80 grs showed a hint of bolt lift resistance and a small shiny spot on case head.

I used a bullet seating comparator and noticed that even with the use of a drop tube the powder was filling the case. 79 gr and up caused the OAL to lengthen over .010", enough so the bullet wouldn't fit into magazine.

I can see why Alliant only mentioned a load for the 175 gr bullet.

Report on the 7mm/375 Ruger: 29.5" fluted 6 groove Lilja SS 1 in 9 twist barrel. A friend fired 400 rounds through it as a 7 STW and sold it to me cheap.

180 Berger target hybrid .015" from rifling. Fed 215 match primer. RL-33

83 shot the best velocity 3210 average at 58 degrees
84 3265 groups opened up
85 3320 too hot

Shot rifle at Tucson Rifle Club's javelina and Rams to verify comeups. Rifle was very accurate at 500m despite the 15 mph crosswinds. Very pleased with results.

Will be using Bore coat in this barrel. Will wait to fall to shoot it again.

Does anybody have some wisdom they could send my way in regards to possible loads with rl 33 for 208 grain hornady a max out of a 300 Dakota? or 250 grain otm berger out of 338 RUM? Any thoughts on if this powder would be useful in a 240 Weatherby with 105 berger? How about for 6mm AI with 105 hornady bthp?
