Question: If you were going to build a new 25.06 or re-barrel the one you have, mostly for Long Range Hunting, what Length and Contour would you use???

It depends on how heavy or light you want the rifle. I personally am a big fan of the medium/heavy sporter contours with a muzzle diameter of 0.700-0.750 for long range rifles. They're heavy enough to not be hot after one shot, but light enough to keep the rifles weight and balance nice. I also like at least a 26" barrel on long range rifles.

Are you planning on running either the Hammer Hunters or the Blackjack 131s to make the most of Long Range for a 1/4 bore? Take a look at them- you'll need a faster twist like 7.5 or 7.

26" Rem Varmint- fluted

or

Proof Sendero (I literally just ordered one from Ryan Pierce who has them in stock ready to roll)

I'd go with a standard 25-06 or 25-06ai, 26" min barrel length, proof carbon or sendero contour steel from a reputable maker. The blackjack website has fast twist barrels in stock and ready to ship in the sizes you'd want. get it in 7.5" twist to handle the cool new bullets, I.E. blackjack 131 or the heavy Hammer Hunters. You'll be able to get the 131's up over 3100fps easy, which makes for an impressive LR rig.

I'd get on quick and look at Blackjacks barrel selection, many of the contours and twists are sold out-- so check now otherwise you'll be behind the curve getting one ordered from a manufacturer.

I run a 26 inch taper to .750, and the only thing I will change is a faster twist. Currently, the 26" drives the 110 AB at 3,310 with Retumbo, but I want to use the heavies.

6.5-06AI. 24" to 26" barrel.

The 6.5-06AI is extremely easy to make brass for. I use .25-06 and run it through a decap/size die. Fireform loads using Hornady max 6.5-06 loads (140 A-MAX and 49.0g H4831SC) lose about 5% MV (to 2760fps) but are very accurate and a joy to shoot. After fireforming, I get 3161fps with a 130g Scirocco II and 58.5g IMR7828SSC. Also very accurate. (80% hit rates on clay pigeons at 600 yards one day when the wind cooperated.) Krieger stainless barrel, 1-8 twist.

3075fps with 140g BT and 53.0g H100V. Can't get 140g A-MAX for fireforming anymore so I bought some 140g ELD-M.

The Nosler 142g ABLR has a claimed B.C. of .625. Looking forward to trying them.

You will never regret the choice.

I would do a 24 inch barrel with a short 2 port break. I would do a Fast twist steel barrel 2B-3B contour. I wouldn't do carbon just cuz barrels won't last long with 25-06 or AI why spend the xtra.

As soon as I toast the barrel on my current 25-06 that's what I'm going to do. A fast twist 25-06AI shooting the 131 sounds like a perfect rig.

28" Sendero, 7 or 8twist for the 120gn'ers and up. A fast twist .25-06 (or AI version) would be serious LR anesthesia.

Something to think about.

Standard 280 Remington...easy peasy

IMR 7828
162g Hornady eld-x; BC = .625
2950fps on a 24" barrel
Small groups
Load is in the Nosler manual #4

This combo simplified a lot, and this is real world!

I have a 24" 25-06 and I would recommend 26" for sure and definitely a faster twist than 10. Even if you just want to shoot 110 accubonds or 115 partitions, go with at least a 9 twist if it can be had. Yes, 7.5 & 131s would be dandy.
