What fps are you getting?
Opinions on 338 bullets for elk within 500 yards

I shot my bull at 500 with my 338 lapua and a 285 ELDM @2900. It smacked him like a mack truck and he was dead before he it the ground. Have lots of kills with that bullet and it performs perfectly. Kills amazingly well.

Try a 250 grain seirra BTHP
Barnes ttsx, are my 1st chice for hunting.

260 grain hammer hunter shoots 1/4 MOA in my 338 edge. Devistsing thermal ballistics on anything that breathes.
An elk was taken recently @1410 yards with one shot kill with this bullet.
This bullet is as long as a 30O grain Berger.

After talking to steve from hammer bullets I have to mock up a round to see if I can get 3.6 OAL and if so I am sold on the 260 hammer hunter

M.A. Shooting a ruger mark 11 in a 24" barrel. I use 200 gr Nosler accubond bullets. I will give you a starting point. Fed-210 primer, Win 760 powder in a RP case. My powder load exceeds 70+ grains. Vel is 3230 fps. I had a mussle brake add to the rifle. Presently having a 338 being built in 26" No. 6 barrel with mussle brake. i am looking forward to see what I can get out of it. I will get out of it. That load I stated puts 5 rounds all touching punching the center out. I had the rifle trigger replaced and down to about a 1.5 pd pull.
A little on my background: Age is 71+ years. Start hand loading at age 14 with a 300 H&H Mag. I have 220 swift, 25-06, 6.5 x 55, 264 Win Mag. 7mm Mag, 30-30, 308 norma mag. shooting a 165 Nosler accubond @ 3300 fps. 26" barrel.
I don't shot my rifles without putting a trigger in it at about 1 to 1-1/2 pound pull.
I find it interesting that a new rifle comes out with higher vel. only to read about it and it's in a 26" barrel, and comparing it to like calibers with 24" barrels. It's not hard to get extra speed out of a longer barrel with a little work. I guess it sell rifles.
I have found that bedding the action and float the barrels generally the rifle with worked up hand loads into shooting good groups if not under .5 at a hundred yards. I work on speed to do the work. Any under 3100 fps, I don't have much use for. I generally use Winchester brass, but Nosler and Hornady brass is very good and found to be lighter case weight. The other is I cut my necks, weight my brass, nad generally neck size the brass after first shot.

Hand Loading:
I have enjoyed hand loading from the start at age 14 (now 71+). I hand load Rifles, Pistols, and Shotguns. Some to save cost, and some to develop loads that works for me and others. Shotgun I generally load for heavy loads with speed for game. I used a 12 gauge with 1-3/8 oz load. Dove, Ducks, whatever. I just change the shot size. I could get Mag loads at light loads price purchase at the store.
Starting out with my 300 H&H Mag at age 14. I got a C&H Single stage press, F.L. Dies. A cut off case and told that was the amount of powder to use for the hand loads with a 180 bullet. Power was IMR. 4831 I believe. All that was included in the purchase of the 721 Rem. H&H Mag. in a 24" barrel. I at the time I didn't think that using a saw off case at was very good way to go. To change powder who knows. I got a Oil tube scale that I used for a few years. Then the world open up to me, and I began to purchase loading equipment, still do even today.
Things sure have changed from then to now. Powder was less than $2.00 pound including Sale Tax. Hundred primers were about $.50 per hundred. Bullets were under $3.00 per hundred or less. A box of 20 round was about $5.00 at the store. So for the same money I could load up a 100 rounds. I could change powder, primers, and bullets. I still have that old reloading book. It showed Jacket bullets and lead bullets loading info. Now I have several loading hand books. I can go back and look at the old one and see loads not shown in today books. The 220 Swift is now slower than the 22-250. Whomever comes up with a new case or round they seem to try and slow down the older round.
I guess that sells rifles.

I am now using 4831 SC.. I tried Reloader 26 and got more velocity, But it is not as temp stable as they say.. I had a bad experience with it and won't use it for hunting anymore.. Just for range shooting it is great.

My load was easy to set up. I loaded the bullet out until it just fit in the magazine box, the adjusted the seating depth for accuracy

88.5 of retumbo. I would start at 85 grains and work up.
