old school ladder sight or Veneer peep??

Debating between the ladder sight or a Vernier sight on a 45-70 lever gun with a 26" barrel and wondering what the better of the two would be? Yes, I know a scope is the best modern application but I'd prefer to stay "old school" with this as I won't be doing much beyond 400-500m given the ballistics of the round and my eye sight.

I use a ladder site on my Sharps My 1886 Winchester with the new Safety won't let me put a ladder site on it both are 45-70

I have a Browning 1886 model (made in 1986) that doesn't have the new Winchester safety.
