my wife wants to shoot with me some.she just loves the "old cowboy" guns.i happen to have a old win 94/30-30.want to shoot some 110 grainers out of it slow.so it wont make her gun shy too.i have never loaded 30-30 win.what would be a good powder to try in the 30-30? thanks fellas.jason

I do not shoot a 30-30 but I have some old reloading manuals and the Lyman 45th edition lists the following load as the slowest with the low pressure.

IMR4064 ----31.0 grains----2168fps------27,000CUP

Recoil is about bullet weight and velocity versus rifle weight, so a slow light bullet is low recoil. However, the manual says the 110 Sierra RN is very inaccurate in their test rifle.

The worst trouble I ever got into with relaoding was with reduced loads so be careful.

The issue with the 110 RN is still the same as it was 30 years ago when I was using them - no cannelure. A person who reloads for a tubular magazine rifle should know what that means when they see it and what precautions to take.

Hodgdon has a "Youth" loads section on their website. You might check there. I would think that 4895 or SR-4759 would be choices here.

I would suggest as mentioned pick a bullet with a canelure.

The Sierra 125 gr isn't a bad choice, close to your desired weight without too much of an increase.

Here is QL for it. Keep in mind try to choose a powder that has close to 100% burn rate.

no concerns about the pointed soft point bullets.i know thats a no-no in a tube mag.i've been shooting 110 grain speer half jackets.i am going to shoot some pointed soft points.but not through the mag.one by one into the chamber.thanks for the concern though.jason

I my opinion, the 30/30 is 'the' easiest cartridge to load for. I've found that it isn't fussy about bullets or powder.

IMR4064 powder and I use the cheapest 170gr FP bullets I can find.:)

Reduced loads

Have you thought about trying the Remington Reduced Load ammo for this? I bought a couple boxes when my son first started shooting and they are pretty light recoil, good for beginning shooters. I forget what grain bullet they load in them, but they are available at many shops.
