I have found myself with a decision to make, and am asking for some help. I want a lightweight rifle (7lbs with scope). This rifle will not be dedicated to long range hunting. I would be tackling game up to elk size with it.
I have a sporterized Mauser 98 chambered in 300 win mag sitting in the safe. This rifle weighs 8lbs 2oz without scope. If I go with this rifle I am leaning towards a Wildcat Composits stock and a rebarrel with a lighter contour. Replacing the trigger with a timney w/ safety, and new bolt shroud. I think this would get me under my weight restriction.
Option B would be to build off a rem 700 short action chambering it in either 300 wsm or 7mm wsm. My options are plentiful this route for components.
I am not looking for different options as far as calibers go. What I am wondering is does one action give me that much of an advantage over the other? Whichever option you think is best, what components would you recommend to shave weight? Thanks in advance.
