Several weeks ago I was down at Eddybo's workin (read that as watchin him work) on a gun. He was wailing away with a RCBS inertia bullet puller ( read as "green hammer") on some type of primer punch apparatus. Anyway what he was doing isn't that important. I commented on how much I dreaded having to use that green hammer. He laughed and said it gave him fits as well and there was only one good use for the thing (primer punch thingy).

Fast forward two weeks later. I'm at the range talking shop with one of the other shooters. I had the hammer with me to pull some bullets and commented on how much I sucked at using the hammer. I'd give myself carpal tunnel wearing it out in the front yard on the cement walkway. I'd make so much noise I hated doing it after dark for fear of disturbing the rest of the community. He laughed and said his worked fine.

Just as I figured. the "nut behind the bolt" finds something else that he can't operate correctly.

Then he added that he used it in a slightly unconventional way. He hit it with a real hammer. Real hammer in the left hand and the green hammer in the right. Hit them together and presto. 6-10 licks at most.

    Tried it today. So easy.

    Ask eddybo.

I just tried this. I missed and the real hammer slipped out of my hand. Tomorrow I will replace the window...

I've always just hit a small 2x4 or 4x4 (foot long or so) on the end. I hold the 2x in my hand loosely and whack it with the bullet puller. 5-6 hits (sometimes fewer) and the bullet is out. I've tried hitting it on about everything and the end of a 2x works about as good as anything (and it's pretty quiet). I haven't tried using another hammer, I'll have to try that next time.

It does work....I am going to keep my collet puller for my press, as I already have tendonitus in right elbow. :)

Another tip for those little plasti-hammers, instead of using the little o-ringie-thingie just use a shell holder. It doesn't get stuck in the screw on cap.

I just use a pair of pliers, something to protect the bullet a little, and use my press, sans die, and run the bullet up thru the press, grab, and back it out. The pliers is held by the die opening in the top of the press. Most of the bullets are still usable.

    :D:D

I just wack the floor. Cheap carpet glued to concrete.

Third wack and I get the satisfying rattle sound.

The three wacks must be pretty good as after about 3 bullet removals I have to straighten out the handle. Its soft though so not much of a problem.:D

Nut behind the bolt - HA!

The lil' green hammer is good on the primer punch also and a lot of other things too.lightbulb

I love my little green hammer ........... when I can find it.

The concrete floor in my garage works just fine. no more than two wacks and they pop right out.

That's what I don't understand. It is just a hammer. When i mean I have worn a hole in the concrete walkway at my house I mean to say........

Probably not hitting it hard enough:rolleyes:.

Bare concrete works best for me also.

Another trick is to place a foam ear plug in front of the bullet to prevent tip damage.

I seem to have found that the secret, for me at least, is not to 'swing' as with a hammer driving a nail When driving a nail the idea is to swing through the head.

With the lil' blue hammer I hold it loosely towards the end of the handle and kind of flip it (hard to explain) so it hits the floor at the 'end' of its travel.

Maybe like cracking a whip or if boxing/bar fight, ya want to make the punch end just as you hit the guy. All the energy is expended at that point.

Also then handle doesn't bend so much.:D:D:D:D

+1 on the foam ear plug inside to catch the bullet without damage - I forgot to put that in my earlier post.
