I tested a 140 ELDM load in my 6.5 PRC the other day. 10 shots at 100 yards and then straight to 10 shots at 600. A little varying left to right wind on the 600, but I held the same wind hold every time

The 100 yard group actually looks pretty ******. But then when you realize it's the same exact size at 600 and not any bigger. And that 70% of the shots actually land in a 2/3 MOA area. So 70% of your shots will hit within 1/3 MOA of where you're aiming and the rest will fall within 1/2 MOA of where you're aiming. It's really not that ****** lol.

I still wouldn't consider this a long range load as far as accuracy goes, but it's definitely a sufficient 600 yard load based off the 20 shots.

100% acceptable for something like PRS also, where targets tend to be 1MOA or larger, and the game is first round hits. That's why establishing end goals up front is so important, no need to do a ton of work on every single rifle that passes over your bench.
 
The way I would apply this to let's say my new 300 prc I am going to start loading for which I have never shot.

Take my bullets (205 Bergers)

Take my powders I want to test

H1000
Retumbo
N570
RL26

Load 1 bullet in .5 increments over the powder ranges for total of 10-15 bullets

Shoot those 10-15 at the same target. Find 5-9 bullets with similar POI within the "dispersion/spread" i want. 3/4" Hunting.

Then take the middle of that grain drop spread, load 20-30 of those. Shoot them all. That will give me my true spread.

If I don't like it, switch powder, then switch bullets.

Anyone see anything wrong or suggest different. The part that was interesting was their techinician saying that from your Min. to Max. powder range, you most likely will not see a huge variance and to just pick a single grain drop and shoot all those 30 at that range and it will tell you what that powder and bullet combo will do.

Thats basically what I do. Only thing with a real accurate rifle and a combo you have to shoot past 100 to see the nodes.

Right. My plan would be shoot the group at 100.

So say N570 and RL26 both shot great (<1moa) at 100 then I would take it to 400 or 500 and check that.

My goal is to shoot 700 yards.

Sounds like a solid plan to me. I would round up some different bullets also.
 
Here's a couple of groups at 100, and then those same exact loads taken to 600 yards. .22 G7 on the 131 hammers and .29 G7 on the 140 VLD's with uniformed meplats. There was a varying 10MPH crosswind and I held the same wind hold for each bullet also.
