I just picked up my new savage model 11 LRH today and looking for a good starting point with this rifle. I have 150,165,and 180 Nosler Ballistic Tips, and 168 gr.Barnes ttsx left over from another .30 gun I was loading for.Powders I already have that may work are R-22,R-17,R-15,and IMR4350.Just mainly looking for your favorite load.Shooting out to 1000yds,need to be able to kill whitetail out to 700-800yds. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My WSM is a tikka with a 1in11 twist but it loves H4350 with 215 primers 65grns under a 180 ct ballistic silvertip loaded to 2.855" delivers between 3003 and 3013 FPS very very accurately, and it's favorite load to date is the 190 Berger Vld above 62grns in federal brass or 62.5grns in winchester brass (both vld loads at 2.904") which delivers 2875-2880FPS all in the same hole@100yrds . Every gun is different and always work up. I am sure someone can chime in with more comparable components. My hunting partner uses the 168 vld and IMR4350 but I can't quote his load. Good luck.

volunteer ,

I'm shooting a Savage model 12 (26" ,1:10 twist ) .

LOADS:
Nosler 180 BT over 62.7 grns. H-4350
Berger 185 VLD over 62.3 grns. H4350
Hornaday 178 A-Max 63 grns H-4350 ( still working on this one )
These are fairly stout loads in my rifle so work up !

Any of these loads would carry enough energy for whitetail at 700-800yds.

Thanks for the info guys.I,m shooting a 10 twist also.Think I'll try some bergers.I have heard that they can be very picky about seating depth.Anyone with more experience playing with this in this caliber? I'm really looking forward to getting started with this rifle. Rumor is this rifle is a shooter.Guess time will tell.Anyone else with good loads in this cal. please post. Thanks

I am currently loading for three different 300WSM rifles, so I have used so many powder and bullet combination that I don't know where to start.

I will give you just a few that have worked well in one or more of the rifles.

First in my Winchester Model 70 Coyote, the first load that shot great was RL-19( 69-70) grains in Norma cases, WLRM primers,165 Nolser Partitions and 165 Nolser Accubonds. This led me to shot 168 grain Sierra Match bullets with 69 grains of RL-19 which is a very good load for paper targets.

I am loading 168 Barnes TTSX bullets for my Ruger Mark II. My elk load is 64.7 Grains of RL-17, Norma cases, WLRM primers. This load reaches about 3000 ft/sec and is not a max load. Another powder that I have used with the 168 Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets is N550. This is a very good powder for the 300 WSM. I used 62.5 grains to get 3000 ft/sec. and again this in not a max load.

In the last few months I have been loading Berger bullets for a friends Model 70 Coyote. We have used 190 VLD's 168 VLD's, and we have settled on 185 Match for his gun. Some of these loads have been very accurate. We have used N560, IMR-7828 and N165. My friend just shot a .60 three shot group at 200 yards with the 185 Match, Norma cases, 215 primers, and 69.0 grains of N165.

What I take from all this is that there are a great number of powder that will work well in the 300WSM. First find a bullet that your gun likes and almost any of the medium slow to slow powders will work. I think the heaver bullets like the slower powder and the lighter ones like the medium powder.
