I'm looking to build a custom 300 RUM based off a Remington 700 action, I kinda have an idea of what I want to do but I wanna hear other people's ideas, what stock, barrel, trigger etc would you use. Also I wanna keep this gun fairly light, I just wanna hear some different ideas!

Hmmmm, going light offer unique challenges, the easiest of which is barrel contour. He SPS factory contour is nice and light….albeit WHIPPY and heats up quick. I swap out the factory recoil lugs, they are not flat, and replace them with PT&G .250" duel pinned tapered lugs. If need be, doing this, your smith can set up the rifle as a switch barrel.
I use Jewel triggers, have fitted Timney Calvin Elites…Jewel is nicer and crisper.
Manners, Greyboe, McMillan and HS Precision all make a lightweight version of their stocks. I like Manners and McMillan personally. B&C make nice stocks for the money, but most weigh a bit. The sporter version feel nice, as what comes on a Winchester Model 70 EW. On my LR rigs I like HS Precision, Manner or McMillan.
There are so many barrels out there, for my F-class guns, I am having good results with Bartlein, with regular replacement barrels, it's whether you want a cut rifled or button rifled barrel. There are many to choose from. Hart, Kreiger, Brux….you name it.
I bought my last Rem 700 SPS in 300RUM as a donor, it's price point is a good starting value, but you will have to have it trued and blueprinted for it to be worthwhile, sometimes the cost for this outweighs the cost of a custom action.
I also swap out the junk bottom metal on Rem 700's, if you want lightweight, Hawkins are light.
I normally add weight and use PT&G S/S or CM bottom metal as most of my builds are target/LR oriented.
My lightweight builds are done on Kimber and Winchester actions mostly cause I can normally start lighter with them.

Cheers.

Not custom but mine.

Rem 700 that has been "lightened" and "Wyattized"
Manners EH2
Carbon 6 27" Remage 1:8tw
Salmon River Solutions Ti brake
Hawkins BDL and Wyatt's box
Tuned Rem trigger.

All bedded and screwed together in my garage. It ain't gunsmith pretty-in fact its almost ugly-like the Charlie Brown Christmas tree, but it shoots. Only thing I would change, Defiance action and the 4" Wyatt's box cause I'm an idiot and did the 3.85".
Rifle alone weighs a little over 7.5 pounds. Regularly shoot like this.

Mind sharing your load info? My barrel is really slow, but accurate.

Here's my 30 nosler on a tenacity action. This setup would work great for the RUM but you may want a more effective brake. Mine is a Vias radial and its just enough off the bench but more than adequate for the field including prone.

I'm running a 230 berger at 2975 over H1k (.5 MOA to 600)
AG composites stock
Muller barrel in a magnum contour at 26 inches
Wyatts mag box
VX6 4-24 in Seekins rings
Loaded with bipod and scope its 9 pounds even, not light but not heavy

All precautions , warnings, safe in my gun, work up to this load, yada, yada, yada. 91gr Retumbo, 210 Berger VLD hunting bullet Fed LRM primers.....This is a warm load in the hot weather, no ejector marks or anything, but primers are flatter than rounded...not like they we're hammered, but pretty close to max in my rifle....I could go more , but why? Wish I had built this when I was young....would have been my go to rifle for all time........with the brake (and weight) it is honestly comfortable to shoot off the bench. I do use a backpack style sling to carry...rsbhunter

Haha. It don't need to be purdy if it shoots.

Heck I think I have somewhat flattened primers with low end H1K and sciroccos
I heard rums can have flattened primers even not being on the top end. I have nothing else as to the usual signs too.

Last range trip, Wenesday the 11th, 2 shots at ram shilouette @500 meters...once again....good enough...2 hits lower right heart area, considered using on upcoming pronghorn hunt, but borders (just a little) on overkill !!!!!!! rsbhunter

You can't go wrong with a 300rum. I have had a factory rem sporter barrel and a benchmark #4 and both shot great. Just don't expect to shoot more than 2-3 shots and let it cool. Plan on a muzzle brake you might need a Wyatt mag box if you want to shoot Berger's. I'm currently shooting 181 hammers at 3400fps with great accuracy! This is my best group 1.18" at 600yds

The rifle im building right now is a 700 la in 7RUM it has a timney trigger in it and boyds thumbhole stock with a mercury tube .ive put a 30 moa rail on it with rings without scope or ammo and if i take off the bipod it weighs 8lbs its got a 26 inch XHR barrel on it so if you went with a carbon fiber barrel you might shave a little more weight off it
