I started working up a load for my new 7mm SAUM this morning and would like some feedback and ideas.

The basics are: Remington 700 LA; Kreiger #5 5R 26"; Leupold 6.5-20x LRT

Reamer has .188 freebore. OAL 3.045" .020" into lands

The loads: Reloder 25; 180 VLD; Nosler brass; 210M primer using the following charge weights:

1 - 59.5
2 - 60.0
3 - 60.5
4 - 61.0
5 - 61.5
6 - 62.0
7 - 62.5

I shot these groups round robin so shot 3 for load 5, 6, and 7 were the last three shots. The wind had picked up slightly from the right. I have no idea why the shots landed to the right.

Test done at 300 yards. Temperaure 40 degrees. No wind.

Another bit of information: 61.5gr clocked 2760 fps (it is the only load I had extra rounds for).

Is anyone else using RL 25 with the 180 VLD in the 7 RSAUM? What kind of charges are you using? What velocities are you getting?

Dan

Are you set on RL 25? I dont have a 7saum but I know some guys that are getting great velocity with retumbo. BTW, how much does your rig weigh? I'm building something similar.

Not set on it at all. GIve me some details on the Retumbo loads.

As far as weight goes, the rifle/scope combination is 9 lbs, 14 ounces. I had another rifle using the same action and stock but with a #4 barrel and a Leupold 3.5-10x40 scope that went 8 lbs 12 ounces. From that info, you should be able to get a pretty good estimate of weight for your rig.

I've always liked the RSAUM cartridge case, I had one in .30 caliber, that I shot LR with. Powder was the issue in mine; I finally locked in to Hodgdon H4831 long cut, using bullets in the 190gr to 210gr weight. RL-25 maybe just a bit too slow; it's a very efficient case but not a lot of acceleration time in the case as they say. So I'd think about a little faster powder like H-4831 LC it might help you. The other powders you could consider is the 4350 family, many of the 7mm Rem Mag guys run this as their go to powder in the 7mm RM
Good luck

Oh, by the way what was your barrel twist?
