6.5-284

thanks I have plenty of H100v and will try it. I am using 131 Hammer Hunters and would like to get them going around 3100 FPS for my next trip to Africa

Hybrid 100 is a good powder but the 3100 depending on barrel length and how fast a barrel is, it might be a stretch to get that velocity an accuracy to come together. Also I really don't think you will hit 3100 unless running like a 28 inch barrel. Reason being is you will probably pressure out first. I used the 100v a lot. Accuracy for me 24 inch barrel 140 grain Berger was at 2848fps. I went higher in charge but got consistent ejection swipes. Others that ran a 26 inch barrel were in the 2900 to 2925fps area. As others had said Retumbo, RL26, RL23, 7828, basically some of the slower powders worked better in the speed area. Speed kill but accuracy kills way way out there. Just my 2 cents and if you don't run you 6.5 to hard you can get some extended barrel life. Mine gave up at about 4500 rounds but I pulled it out about 2 months ago and just was tinkering around and found a hard carbon ring past the throat. But I pretty sure it's still in the dirt. Need to get it replaced. It's been setting for about 4 years now and I have bought 3 different rifles since then to play with. So I'm not in a hurry but the 6.5x284 is a great caliber.

WOW, nice.
We head to Namibia late September
Trying to decide what to take.
Vithivouri N165 and N560 will work well N560 will give more vel . If you use Lapua brass you might get close too 3100 fps . I haven't tried the 131 gr Hammer in the 6.5-284 it requires a 1-7.5 twist my 6.5-284 is too slow for that bullet , but my 6.5 Prc 1-7.5 twist is at 3180 with the 131 gr hammer using 57.3 grs of N165 . I think I can do better with N560 . I'm running a 25 in Bartlein.

my Cooper is a 1in 8 twist and the 131HH seem to do good 1/2 " groups at 125 yards but have to wait for the farmer to cut the grass so I can go out to 2-400 yards

You might want to reconsider the 131 HH with an 8 twist especially when going after big, tough African game as the barrel twist is critical for them to perform correctly. Maybe Steve can chime in @RockyMtnMT

The 130 gr shock hammer requires a 1-8.75 twist and the 134 gr power hammer requires a 1-8 twist you might reconsider the 131 gr that requires a 1-7.5 twist it was specifically designed for the faster twist 6.5 prcs . I wouldn't take any chances on a African trip , I'm sure those other 2 will perform.

I don't know if your just stuck on just using Hammer bullets but any of the solids will work fine. Also a 140 Accubond would be just fine. The Cape Buff I would find a solid for hands down. Everything else has been killed with anything from a Berger to Remington core locks. They are no harder to kill than an elk or a moose and the Europeans have been killing moose for years with cup and core 6.5 bullets. Regardless of what powder you choose accuracy will be key and knowing what distance you are comfortable with and can hit with. I would say know your limits and what the bullet can do at what range. Most bullets don't expand much past 1600 to 1800fps. The ALBR is supposed to expand a "little" down to 1300fps. Also deer to caribou size game probably I personally if I have less than 1000ft/lb of energy its probably a no go. This generally puts me shooting way out there. Elk size and bigger is about 1200ft/lb of energy. You need to know this if taking longer shots and how much retained velocity/energy the bullet is supposed to have and then error on the side of more will be better so try and get a little closer. What I mean by this is if your at 900 yards and your out side of that zone get to 800yrds.
