375/408 Banded Solids Test

My 375 is a standard case and 2900 is attainable, it is MAX. My 375 barrels are 30 in. The Snipe-Tac should push it faster but 3150 is probably being a little optimistic. As far as the seven being stable at 3150 from a 5.5 exit twist, I simply dont know and I will bet nobody else on the planet knows. If you order the barrel you will probably be the first to answer the question.

Thanks!!

Kelly,

I assume that you have considered what you will do if this bullet barrel combo does not shoot well. Just curious what the "plan B" is?

Steve, Yes, Im ordering two different barrels...My primary barrel will be somewhere around 1 : 11 (ish). This shoots the more main stream bullets like the Rky mtn and the SMK.

The other barrel will really be dedicated to the long solids up to 7 cal.....This is where my struggle lies along with everyone else. Im willing to use an experimental barrel for this qwest. If we can get enough guys dabbeling in this area, sooner or later we will find the sweet spot.

Im resisting the urge to just change directions and settle with the 338 AM or snipe tec. I dont want to go this route cause its such a barrel burner. 375 really seems to be an efficient cartridge.

I gotta say it is very nice of you to take the R&D risks for someone else. Unless I am missing something and you are not the one at risk, or you have a vested interest other than just a potential customer of the test projectile.

Steve, not sure what you are getting at here??? Im a long distance shooter and hunter, Im not a gun maker or a bullet maker. I dont plan on shooting just one projectile. I'll shoot anything that works. If I can't find something that will work, then I'll spin my own.

It sounds like you're suggesting that I have a vested interest??? Perhaps others find it odd that people like me are so passionate about shooting that they are willing to spend some money in the quest for something better.

Yea, Im the one at risk with an expiermental barrel. Yea, I wish the bullet makers would do more, but Im not waiting around for them.

Kelly,

Not getting at anything, just understanding. I can not afford to just buy a barrel and build a rifle for a chance that a bullet that someone else is in the process of developing, might work. And if it does not, being stuck with a barrel that is not usable for anything else on the market.

I guess in the end, my thanks to you for sticking your "neck" out for a chance at new product, just for your personal use.

10-4 on that. Pretty nice that there are members here stepping into the frontiers and sharing their findings with the rest of us. I think the 'bug' has bit them hard and the fact that they share makes for very interesting reading.

RockyMtn, while we are on the subject I am another one that has no dog in this hunt. I do not make or manufacture anything nor do I represent any one that does. I started testing bullets for Noel Carlson because I believe the long banded solids have the capability to take longrange shooting to the next level. I agreed to to this with the understanding the project would be totally transparent. Noel also wanted it this way. Anyway it is looking like the gamble is going to produce products that longrange shooters of all descriptions are going to like. If kelly decides not to try the 5.5 barrels I will order one and give it a whirl. Anyway most folks spend more money on cigarettes, beer and casinos than I do on these projects. Trying a new barrel only costs around 600.00, I dont know where I can get that much enjoyment for the cost. I dont drink, smoke, chew or gamble. My job has me practically tied to a flop eared mule and a pack of hounds, I have to hang around close to the house in case the boogy-man comes knockin. Sooo, I shoot a lot while waiting for the call.

Augustus,
Thanks for spelling it out here....You're 100% correct, people have passions in life. Some like golf, some like bowling. When these become passions, people spend tons of money at it. My friends brother is into stock cars, my brother fishes bass tournaments. You would not believe how much money these guys spend in their quests.

I love guns, it's not a passion, but an addiction. I don't even want to talk about how people spend money on addictions.

Anyhow, to me it's all about what I can get out of a bullet. My edge is a great gun to about 1,300 yards, but I want a 1 mile gun. And these Chey tac's seem to address this distance the best. I think the 375 Chey tac is on the verge of something great, we just need to find the right bullet.

You and I can wait for the world to pass us by or we can make it happen. I choose to make it happen, even if it costs me some dough, heck we can't take it with us anyway.

I'm ordering the one barrel in the slower twist so I can have a new gun for hunting season, and I hope to order a second (possibly the 5.5). Regardless, I plan on posting the results this summer as I get them. And everything will be transparent (good, bad or ugly).

Upon striking a median these bullets have a very predictable habit of the first 1/2 inch of the long thin nose folding to one side. It dont seem to take a lot of impact for the nose to bend ninety degrees to the body. When I fired it into the clay the nose completely folded back and the body also bent causing the recovered projectile to look like a doughnut with a little tiny whole in the center. Right now I cant tell you how fast this will happen when striking a game animal; however it dont seem to take much to get at least the first 1/2 inch of the nose to go ninety degrees. These bullets are copper and after they have been perfected there may be a oxygen free copper version that will deform more quickly. Just as it is I think on Mule deer and Elk this thing would be devastating. The hunting applications of this projectile is still a big question mark. We will see. I dont know if it would be legal in some states.

Augustus,
Why not attempt to drill out the center of the 420 gr bullet here and turn it into a hallow point. If we could do this, the bullet should open up nicely on big game???

I'm ordering my 1-11 twist barrel next week for the 375 snipe tac. I'm waiting a bit on the second 9----5.5 twist barrel. I seem to be getting mixed feedback on the gain twist barrels. It would be good to hear more from others on gain twist barrels in general.

Have you tested your 1--8 barrel anymore on the 420 grainers???

Noel may want to address the question of hollow pointing the solids. The tungsten core will probably be a better direction to take for making a frangible. The testing with the 8 twist using the 7 cal. 420 gr. solid copper is done. They are not compatible at vel. past 2600 fps. I will be testing the 6.5 cal 400 gr. solid copper out of the 13-6.5 barrel in the next few days. I have already fired a few out of this barrel and got promising results. The seven cals. shoot very nice out of the 6.5 twist to around 2700. Anyway all the questions about these projectiles and the twist rates required to use them should be answered soon. Also, to each his own, but I had a 338 snipe-tac and had it rechambered to a standard 338/408. I was not happy with the snipe-tac. It was a little picky about the loads it liked but shot very well once the magic one was found. It displayed extraction problems I could not resolve even with mild loads. I do not like to fireform brass. The standard 338/408 has displayed sub half min. groups on virgin necked down brass and extraction is smooth and consistant. I have not found a load it would not shoot well. Anyway that is what I experienced and Im sure there are others who would disagree.

When I had the Snipe-tac rechambered my barrel lost around an inch going from 30 to 29 in. My load for the snipe-tac pushed the 300 smk to 3250. After losing an in. of barrel and going to the standared case I am running the same bullet to 3200. The improved case may show more advantage when utilizing longer barrels. Anyway I am sticking with standard cases from now on.

Well, now you've got me thinking........Im still going with the 375, but I will look into just the standard version intead of the improved version....I dont like the idea of having to fool with brass either.

On another note, I am hearing that the GS 420 is stable in a 1---7 twist a real high velociites. Dave at Balckdiamond told me today that he hearing 1--8 twist looks promising. So, Im waiting a bit for the dust to settle. Have you tried the GS 420s yet in your other barrel?? It would like they may work>>>>>

kz

I havent fired any of the GS line except the 355, has someone actually tested a GS 420. I fired the 355 out of an 8 twist.

Dave, from Balck Diamond said they are sending him some 420 grainers to try. They told him they are made for a 1---8 twist....His gun is ready to test these critters.

You may try to get some of these and try them with your other barrel. One of the guys from snipershide forum worked with GS as they were developing the 420 grainer, he said they worked well in a 1---7 twist with no stability issues well beyond any Chey tac speeds.
