338 Lapua questions

[Dialing Long Distance]

I'm picking up a Ruger RPR this Friday chambered in 338LM. I'm new to the "Super Mag" and was curious as to what other guys are having luck with as far as powders and bullets. I have some 300 gr. MatchKings, and 250 gr. MatchKings, I'll be getting some Berger's too I figure, because I've has such good luck with those two brands in the past for my other rifles.

I plan to hunt with this rifle too, mainly because my mind won't let me own a gun I can't hunt with. The weight doesn't bother me really, but this is my first chassis rifle, and I'm hoping I'll be able to make myself comfortable with it.

I like h1000 with a 285 eld, it also worked well for me with a 300 OTM.

I picked up some H1000 today for some load development. I'd really like to find some RL26.

Retumbo works well I get about 50 fps over h1000 with 300 Berger's out of a 28" barrel. Both shot really well

Retumbo for heavy bullets.

7828 for the lighter stuff.

A lot of guys swear by H1000. I do not. It's good for a wide weight range, but not great at any one thing IMO.

I use RL33 with a 300 gr berger OTM , or E hunter .


N570 or RL33 should give the highest velocity with 300 gr bullets .

Retumbo and H1000 with Berger 300 OTMs and Fed 215Ms are working for me. Retumbo seems to be slightly better at distances over 1,000 yards with my Barrett MRad.

I've used US869 and Sierra 250 Match in my Savage 110BA with great results.

As others have said, H1K and Retumbo for temp stable powders. 90gr of H1K under a 300gr bullet seems to be a go-to load for lots of folks. N570 or RL33 if max velocity is what you're looking for.

I like H1000 under Berger 300 OTM,s. If I do my part, they group the best, under .75" @ 100 meters

I think you will find that the 250s will shoot better than 285 or 300 in the 338 lapua.
