Hey-guys;-I-am-building-a-new-Long-range-rifle.
I-am-trying-to-decide-on-which-round-to-go-with.
I-am-trying-to-decide-between-the-30-378-Weatherby-Mag
or-the-30-338-Lapua-Mag.
The-30-378-Weatherby-Mag-is-what-I-am-leaning-towards.
The-30-378-holds-more-powder-which-will-allow-for-higher
velocities.
I-wont-have-to-neck-it-down-because-Norma-makes-the-brass
I-am-also-leaning-towards-a-tight-chambered-30-378-Wthby-Mag.-It-would-have-a-.338-neck-diameter.
I-am-also-considering-the-30-338-Lapua-Mag.
Can-you-guys-give-me-suggestions-and-your-thoughts
on-which-round-to-go-with.

The 30-378 with a custom chamber would be the way I would go. I would look around and decide what is the heaviest VLD bullet that I would want to shoot and have the throat cut to fit that. Maybe something in the 240 grain range would be a good choice. I would check the bearing surface on the big Accubond and the big SMK and make sure the throat is good for both.

Depending on whether this is a walk around gun or a sit on a rock and shoot a mile gun, I would get as much barrel lenght as I could tolerate.

I-am-looking-foward-to-using-the-Lawton-Equipment.

Would a 7mm built on the 338 Lapua case (aka 7mm Allen Mag) be able to accomplish the same thing with less kick?

I-would-say-no-if-your-not-using-an-improved-version-of
the-7mm-338-case.
-The-regualr-30-378-Weatherby-Mag-will-push-a-240-grn(.711-BC)-Sierra-MatchKing-out-of-30"-pipe-at-3200-fps-or-faster.
A-regular-7mm-338-Lupa-Mag-will-push-a-200grn-Bullet
out-of-a-30"-pipe-at-around-3200fps.-HOWEVER;
if-you-improve-the-the-7mm-338-Lupa-mag-I-would-say-maybe.
Kirby-Allen-has-an-improved-7mm-338-Lapua-Mag
called-the-7mm-Allen-Mag-that-is-awesome.
If-you-improved-the-case-like-the-7mm-Allen-Mag
than-yes-it-would-be-close-maybe-better-with-the-same-
weight-bullet-with-better-BC.-However;-if-you-improve
the-30-378-Weatherby-Mag-case-than-I-believe-it-would-beat
the-improved-7mm-round-becuase-you-can-use-heavier-bullets
with-high-BC's-at-faster-velocities.
Kirby-Allen-can-explain-this-better.-I-know-his-7mm-Allen
Mag-is-an-awesome-round.-I-thought-about-going-with-that
type-of-chamber;-but-I-don't-want-to-do-all-the-case-prep.

Anyhow;-both-are-going-to-kick-and-give-great-performance.
I-ve-always-wanted-a-big-.30cal-and-you-can-shoot
heavier-bullets-with-the-.30cal.-
The-7mm-only-has-bullets-up-to-200grns;-and-I-believe
those-are-custom-bullets.-I've-heared-the-30-378
Weatherby-Mag-in-a-tight-neck-chamber-and-custom
rifle;-is-an-awesome-round-and-very-hard-to-beat-at-long-range-shooting.-However;-if-you-have-a-round-like-a
338-408-Chey-Tac;-than-that-round-is-probably-the-best
long-range-round-out-there.

a-better-answer.
