30-06 over 308

Sounds like you have a great build plan. I went with a 7 SAUM which is very similar to the 280AI but on a short action. I like shorter rifles so every bit adds up 😆. Look at the BC on the .284 180 eldm! You have to go 225gr in 30 cal to Beat it. Very efficient cartridge and will extend your range way past the 308!

I've never "lost" ammo and had to run to a local hardware store to buy some. Would not worry about that at all. Bring a back up 308 if you are worried.
Haven't done much research on the saum calibers may need to look in to them

Difference between 30-06 and 308 gets bigger with heavier bullets. 175gn and below...not much unless you load them up. 300 Win .Mag. is great for hammering big things at long distance. I believe the 30-06 is better across the board. Easier to find ammo, easier to load ,more versatile, and cheaper to shoot with out hammering your shoulder. You can load down with H4895, or up to max. with some of the great powders and bullets that are now available. You could probably punch out one of the 308s to 30-06 if you wanted. Just my $.02.
Both of my 308s are short action so cant punch them out.if they were long action rifles I would do do to one of them.my savage is a med length action but they only made the model 11 I have one year so even if it was a long action I wouldnt mess it up and my ruger I know is to short

Hello all as title says I've been thanking about buying a Remington 700 adl in 30-06 to do my first semi custom rifle build and my question is is there really a need for a 30-06 if I already have 2 308s I do have everything but brass to load for a 30-06 but up to 175 grain bullets what can a 30-06 give me over my 308 for whitetailto elk.if I do not buy a 30-06 I will most likely try to find a 300 wm or 300 wsm. Thanks in advance
I think you are in the right track. Your logic seems to me to be spot on. I love my 30-06 but do not and have never owned 308. I do have and recommend 300 WSM and 264 WM.

Please post up pics when you are finished with acquisition. Would enjoy seeing it.

My previous post may have come off sounding like I was slamming the 308 and 300 Win. Mag. over the 30-06. I am not. I own several of each cal. along with the 280 Rem. All are great rounds and shine as all around cartridges. For my hunting of elk and game animals on down at under 500 yards , 30-06 is hard to beat. I've loaded it down for my grandson with 125 gn. and H4895, and up to stout loads with 200gn + bullets. You will not go wrong with any of the rounds listed. Build one and have fun. Then build another one. :)

I'm a 30-06 guy that has been shooting this round for 53 years and understand why you would question the need for a 30-06 as much as I would question the need for a 308. Basically not much difference at all. Ballistically when it comes to trajectory they are pretty close up to 300 yards where the 30-06 has a slight advantage of an inch or less and at 400 yards the advantage increases by 2 inches and at 600 yards the 308 drops 8 inches more than the 06. I make the comparison on a 165 grains Federal trophy bonded as I could not find factory loads for the 09 in 175 grains, any way I load only 165 grains for deer and elk myself with better ballistics than the factory loads.

If there is really a true advantage is that I can shoot an M1 Garand with this round and I do.

If you have two .308's don't build another (.06)
If you want a bigger hole make one of your '08s into a .338 Federal.
If you want more distance and don't want to punish your shoulder or build a flame thrower .280AI.
To stay in .30 cal and thump Elk .300WM and every mom and pop has ammo.
If I was going to do a short fatty 7SAUM for sure.
Wait! I have done all these but the SAUM....I'm going to catch heck if the wife sees this lol!

I went through this a while back. Have 308, 30-06, and 300WSM. Found that the 06 pushed the 180's better due to larger powder capacity. I have a 30-06 load that pushed 165's as fast as my 300WSM, somehow. I guess it depends on the range you plan to shoot at. 308 and 30-06 claim to be nearly identical in performance. And they are, until you get up to 180 grain bullet weights.
I wouldn't worry about the fictitious need to big power for elk. I've been killing them with 308 pushing 150's for years. Just shoot what ya got, enough to be really accurate with it in field positions, and you'll be successful. I've used all three to kill elk. Good luck.

White tails dont take to much to kill them 308 will do it great if you going to hunt elk go with the 300wsm

The 308 is my choice and has been for 45 years. The 30-06 only gets about 100 FPS velocity than the 308. I have shot 1000 yards accurately with my 308 many, many times. The 308 gives you a shorter bolt pull and a shorter cartridge than the 30-06 and a slightly lighter rifle. I will stick with my 308 and 168 grain B.T.H.P. bullets.

I went 30-06. Personally unless you are shooting planning on shots past 500 I'd go 30-06. Lots of people are under the impression that 30-06 offers only ~100 ft/sec over 308. That's only true if you are shooting factory ammo loaded a few ksi short of 308 operating pressure. If you load an 06 to modern pressure it'll push 200's to ~2700 ft/sec from a 22 inch barrel. Out of your 25 you could probably hit 2800 pretty easily. The best part is say you get separated from your ammo ,anywhere in the world, if you find somewhere that sells ammo they will have 30-06.
