1000 yard .308

Oh ok, i ns only, thats probably why my charge lies a little below the neck shoulder junction. With virgin brass i'll crunch some kernals though.

Are you just off the lands?

Michael,

what are the specs of your rifle? I am seriously interested in shooting something like that.

Bartlein 28" 5R 11.25x. No flutes. Sendero contour. I think 11.25 is a bit lean for the 215 but at 88' above sea level and 50 degrees they punch perfect holes at 300. With altitude they should be more than fine. I believe 11.25 is adequate for the 200 hybrid.

I am working on getting a remington 700 5R, but those only have a 24 inch barrel. It has the 11.25 twist. What speed do you think I can squeeze with the 210 VLDs. I am at 150 feet above sea level in South Texas.

I wanted to rebarrel a 243 I have into a 308, but that takes time, and I want to compete on May 18 at a local F-Class 600 yard competition.

I can tell you that a 210vld is over .100 deeper in the case than a 215 hybrid in my gun touching the lads. The bearing surface is a mile long on that bullet and you will hit pressure sooner than the 200 or the 215. Looking at those numbers has made me hold off on further testing until I can get my hands on some 4350 have 30lbs of Varget but can't seem to find H4350 anywhere. I'll probably go ahead and get some Palma brass too.

While I have played with a factory Rem 700 5-R, I never tried anything over 190s. RL15 was the choice powder for that rifle and load. I was getting 2657. RL15 was the slowest powder I tried. That was before RL17 was introduced. I never thought back then of trying H4350 let alone heavier bullets. Of course back then we didn't have these wonderful bullets!

It is very hard for me to say if H4350 would burn completely in a 24" barrel but could be worth a shot. Maybe 215 magnums would help it burn a bit faster. I think it would be worth a try.

If not, I would try the 190 vld over RL15 or maybe RL17. N540 and N550 are great as well. 540 up to 190s and 550 for the 200+ variety.

You'd loose roughly 100+/- FPS against a 28" barrel.

I am near your level of altitude, and have that same rifle, shooting the same bullets you are asking about.

I get about 2,350 fps with Varget powder, Lapua brass, & Federal 210 primers, but I'm also not pushing it to the limits, either. But I am shooting some really nice groups at 100 yards.

I see you are a certified RCBS buyer..... Might want to take a hard look at John Widden's die sets. I use his bushing dies with an RCBS front load seater. His dies are over the top in quality and bore finish, every one like a mirror inside.

If I could afford a $275 set of dies, I'd have my custom .300 Ackley dies already. LOL

Until then I'll keep using my .300 Wby neck-sizer. :D

Ran 40-42.5 grains of Varget in Lapua Palma, BR4's and a 215 Berger jambed .020 and 41.5 and 42 grains went in the low .2's the rest in the mid .4's. Gotta load up a batch of 42gr and run them with the Magneto speed on and get a velocity but it should be good.
