I have a 1916 Spanish Mauser that I would like to sporterized it to a .338 Federal. Would this be safe for the receiver? Possibly to high pressures or is this something I should have a gunsmith look at for me? gun)

The .338 Federal is nothing more than a .308 Win necked up to a .338 caliber bullet. I would say you'd be perfectly fine, as long as a competent smith does the build, and you buy a good quality name brand aftermarket barrel.

Even though the Spanish did re-barrel the actions made for 7X57 for 7.62X51 this action is NOT really built to handle pressures above 45000 CUP of the old 7X57. This is a small ring Mauser action. Any gunsmith worth his salt will not barrel one of these for these higher pressure rounds. If you want a Mauser action there are plenty of cheaper large ring 1898 actions around and they are made to handle that pressure.

Too much work on a military Mauser action just to mount scope rings. Then clean it up in general for a good finish. This is a bad financial decision. The older military actions are not that strong or hard and Mauser made due with pretty soft steel by modern standards.

Leave this one as is and find another donor in 308 or just buy a new 338 Federal. This caliber is available in the AR 10 platform and is a rocking 300 yard big game combination. Customizing an old military Mauser will cost as much or more.

That's a wrap; that's all folks. :rolleyes::):D

Well I guess that answers my question. Thank you all I think I will end up rolling with the AR10 format. I just wanted another opinion. Again thank you all.
