I am new to long range game and I want to build a good all around long range hunting rifle (800 yards or maybe a thousand at max). Not looking for a bear rifle more deer mainly, antelope sometimes and elk if I ever get the chance. The build will be in a savage 110 action. I like the sounds of the 280 ai but I like magnums also. It will have a brake on it. I currently have a 300 Saum in a Remington model 7. I want to stickk with a 7mm or .30 cal bullet.

I have a 280AI and would highly recommend it, especially if you reload and enjoy something a little unusual...

That said, I do have a little bit of secret 7STW envy going on....

Which caliber?
7mm Rem Mag, .280ai, or .284 Win? I want a long range deer rifle with the ability to kill a elk if needed. It seems the .280ai is getting close to the same velocity as the 7mm Rem Mag., Not sure on anything about to .284 win. I really don't want a muzzle brake, 26" barrel max

Not sure you didn't like the answers you got if you didn't might want to expand on what your really looking for?

do a search for 7-300 win, i read all about the round and love the gun. I am running the berger 180 at 3170 and it is easy to load for and shape brass

Thanks for replies and opinions so far. I know that new wildcat calipers are always coming out thus the reason I asked the question. There may be some that I didn't know about. I am researching as much as I can before I decide on a caliber.

You need to build three rifles....

1. 338 Lapua
2. 300 WSM
3. 7mm RM

Once you build these three you will have the best long range arsenal ever. Then please take photos and post the pictures since I can't afford any of those at the moment. :D

Go with the 7mm RM. Tons of bullet selections, tons of load data, can shoot 130 class bullets up to 180 (depending on twist), major rifle manufactures chamber their rifles in them, High BC pushing .530, and with a 150 grain bullet at 3100 FPS will be 29 inches low at 500 yards, and can harvest pretty much any north american game (with good shot placement).

You said you already have a 300SAUM so go with a 7 SAUM for your build great cartridge ,and you already have brass just need to neck down and your off to the races, the 7 SAUM will meet your needs all the way around.
