Hello all, it's been a while since I've posted a long range question. So here we go. I have recently purchased a SWFA S.S. scope. With this scope I purchased a 20 MOA base to mount it to. Oh by the way I've mounted this on my 3oo Weatherby. Once I had everything mounted I discovered I still have another 65 MOA of adjustment down. So I started thinking why wouldn't want to utilize the total amount of adjustment possible from my scope? After zeroing my scope at 100 (sitting on the 20 moa base) I had 65 moa of adjustment down and 75 moa of adjustment up, that is a total of 140 moa of adjustment. So my thought was if I could find an 80 MOA base that would give me almost the full swing of adjustment for shooting longer distances. I started searching the internet for this beast and have had no luck what so ever. Has anyone out there tried this out or am I going on a wild goose chase? And or do you know where to purchase one? I ultimately would like to use the max ability of my scope to reach out as far as possible. Any guidance, theory, help or suggestions please I am open for all direction. lightbulb

I emailed them and if I remember right they would make a 60 moa base as needed.

For applications like that I use a Variable Gantry Mount.
I have used them on my .22lr to shoot out to 500 yards alot, and even out past 700 just playing around. But mostly 500 yards
The way they come there is 5 settings, that can be adjusted from anywhere 0 moa to 100 moa. and thats just in the base! and can be slightly modified for around 400 moa of adjustment.

Ideally, you want the scope in or near the center of the turret range at the most used distance.
As scopes get near the end of there adjustments they are not as precision when making MOA adjustments.
If you only hunt/shoot 2 or 300 yards a zero Moa base is best. At 600 to 1000 yards a 10 to 20
MOA base works best if you shoot only 1000 yards you may want a 25 to 30 MOA base, but you may not be able to get a 100 or 200 yard zero.

Drbill and Clayne b, both of the scope mounts that you have posted are awesome. I have never seen such a thing and am impressed. But I love doing the mill dot math also. So I'm still looking for a solid rail with a large moa rake (if possible). If I have no luck finding one at least I know I can get one of these mounts to do the trick.
JE custom, I understand about the accuracy going south the closer you get to the bottom of the adjustment of the turret. I learned this the hard way. But as I stated before I am on a 20 moa base now and zeroed at 100 and still have another 65 moa of adjustment down. So maybe not an 80 moa but maybe something close to that. I really would like to utilize as much of the turret as possible. I haven't seen anything past a 30 moa and was just wondering if there even were such rails out there. I love all of your guys input into my questions and issues. Bear with my ignorance while I'm trying to get the biggest bang for my buck but I was even contemplating throwing a shim under the rear of my base just to see if I can get the adjustments I'm looking for. Not shoot it like this, but just a test to see if I can get the adjustment out of the scope and satisfy my curiosity.

The inserts can be used to add more or less MOA to the system.

Clayne B, very cool. So I could use these with a 20 moa and get 40 or I could use them with a 40 moa and get 60 moa. As we have been chatting back and forth I have found a 40 moa base that Knight Force makes. I could put the rings with this and achieve what I'm looking for.
Well I ended up machining a small angled shim to go under the base just to see what it would do. I ended up with a 70 minute base. I still have almost a full revolution left to turn down. I went out to the range on Sunday and zeroed at 100. I shot to 2, 3, 4 and 500. The scope was right on at each distance. I went back to 100 and did a three shot group in a 1" square. I then jumped out to 1000. At 1000 I adjusted 21 minutes and hit the steel on first shot. At 1000 I still have 49 minutes to go. So I jumped out to 1500, it took me three shots but I hit the steel at 1500. I adjusted 34 minutes and still had some left. I am amazed how true the riffle shoots and how much adjustment I ended up with. I know it's probably not the normal thing to do but I had to satisfy my curiosity. I don't know but I'm thinking of having the machinist at work make a solid base like this for me. Thank you guys for all the input to my questions. I love learning more and more about long range. There is just something about it that just keeps driving me to reach further out there.

Nice, I just got a SS 3-15, Seems nice. I have it on my .22lr
I noticed your scope is a 5-15, does it have an adjustment knob for the variable from 5-15? The reason why I ask this question is mine is a 5-20 so I assumed it would be adjustable from 5-20 magnification. Well I don't see a adjustment knob other than the focus knob. So I am assuming it has the ability to see out to 20 mag once you focus on it. Am I wrong on this? Do you have a zoom knob on yours?
