Savage 110 BA review/discussion

My birthday is coming up in about a month and am wanting to get a decent starter gun. I like the look of the 110 BA. It has three things that I definitely want in my next rifle: muzzle break, pistol grip and adjustable cheek piece.

From what I see on Gunbroker.com they range around 2K new. Savage says it's their best. Is it, really? For a gun "out of the box" how does it perform? Or if I have to ask I probably wouldn't recognize the difference between it and my 243 VLS?

How much cost difference is there to reload the 300WM and the 338 Lapua?

Honestly,

I would save just a little more cash and watch the classifieds for a custom in 300 win mag. I have the savage 110 hs in 338 lapua and if I had to do it again I would save a little longer and have a full custom made.

I had some trouble with my savage and ended up sending it to Lorenzo Young at deadly precision and he worked his magic on it with a trued action bed, job new barrel and break etc and now it shoots flat *** amazing, but I wish I would have just had him build me one from scratch cause after all the messing around I am in this one about the same as I would have been with a custom.

Don't get me wrong savage makes some nice accurate rifles, but if your gonna spend that kind of coin on a gun go with a nice used rifle or a custom build of your own you'll get more bang for your buck!!

As far as caliber I would lean towards the 300 win mag as a starter not much they cant do with the right load and bullet combo and alot cheaper to learn with than a lapua.

Just ask Broz on here about the 300 win he has enough posts and knowledge about that caliber to fill a **** book.

If you want to save money get the 300 win mag. If you like to spend some extra cash and have a blast shooting the big boy and everyone saying how loud and how much blast comes off the muzzle get the .338 lapua. Hell I love mine , the blast the noise and shooting it . I did a few things to change mine and it just shoots .... It aint cheap to shoot. New muzzle brake and a few little things and it came alive . I was shooting mine awhile back and the range master told me to leave because" we don't shoot .50 cal here" I said its a .338 lapua. He calmed down and left me stay . LOL

So you're saying it is louder and more expensive to shoot than my 243?

Seriously, I was leaning towards the 300 WM. I'd have to shoot down the median on I-10 to shoot more than 1000 yards around here. Too many swamps, rivers, creeks and camp grounds. My property is over a mile long (north-south) but it is mature pines/hardwoods and 28 year old planted pines. I can manage 800 if I sit in the back of my truck and put the target up about head high. I shoot that some times with my 243 and don't do all that bad for a stock gun and hand loads.

I had a 338 Win Mag back in 1992 while up was up in Alaska. First time I shot it the temperature was about 15 below zero. I was freezing to death but wanted to shoot it. Bang, 2 stitches in my left eye brow. Blood froze before it could even run down my cheek. I stopped at a gunsmith's shop on my way home and dropped it off to have a KDF (that's what they were calling them back in '92). Kicked like a hot 308 after that. When I PCS'd I gave it to a young soldier that worked hard for me. He sent me a picture of a nice caribou he killed with in in late '93.

So I take it from your reply that you have one in the 338? How well does it group?

Mine will shoot consistently under 1MOA in 338 Lapua. The only knocks I have is the weight and the magazine is too short. Pretty much have to shoot the 300 SMKs or you have a single shot. Jeff

I was hoping for that kind of money it would easily start under 1/2" MOA. Stock 700 hunting rifles will do that. I've got four of them in 243. If it won't at least make a ragged hole at 100 with 3 shots I don't want to spend the money and have to have a lot of work done to it to make it shoot. I'm beginning to think I gonna stick with a 700 of some sort.

Personally, i love savage's out of the box accuracy. My 12 in 223 shoots a .325" at 100 with good Hornady ammo all day long. But for $2000 you could get a Surgeon action($1000), Saturn barrel($320), and a B&C stock($250). For a touch more have a gunsmith precision chamber($475) it for you and PRESTO! you have an immensely accurate rifle for just a hair more. Throw some nice glass on top and you're in business.

Yes its probably double the cost of a .243 to shoot or more. Accuracy, 1/2 MOA is achievable Its always about what you want to achieve with the caliber you choose . If your thinking one ragged hole then custom all the way or at least a barrel and trigger will go a long way. There's no free lunch, now where have I heard that before?

mine shoots pretty decent. still breaking the barrel in as well. playing around with loads and different powders of retumbo, h1000 and trying to get in some reloader 33. shoothing nosler brass and 300 grain scener's

I say it's 14+lbs of love without ammo and glass... Too much for what I do. And like others have said, if you're going to pay 2k and want bugholes, go custom. Leave the stock stuff alone, brand irrespective.

I do think Savages shoot better than most Remmys nowadays out of the box, but for 2k, custom gets the nod, even if it's just on a doner Sav or Rem action.

If you want 338, I wouldn't go Savage unless you did the factory LRH, HS, or BA, or built on the Sin or Norma cartridges due to COAL. But then again, if I were doing custom 338, the smallest I'd do is Lap Improved... etc, etc...

I have had (3) 110BA .338 Lapua's and they all shot well 1/2 MOA or better, but I traded or sold them (because thats what I do)
I have also had a 110FCP it was just as nice but that BA stock is kick ***.

My Friend has all 3 110BA's
308, 300win, and 338LAPUA.

He just purchased the 300 win to make the set and said he may sell it since he doesn't have another $2000 to scope it at the moment. so if you settle on the 300 win shoot me a message I may be able to make you a deal.
