Need some help from 284 Win shooters

If someone could tell me what the COAL of a 284 win loaded with a 180 berger at 3.468 to the ogive using the hornady ogive measuring tool would be i would really appreciate it. I am trying to find out if i will have enough mag room.

no, but I can measure the 180 Berger from Ogive to meplat if that would help.

My crude measurements show ~.715 from the ogive to the meplat.

Not really building but I am going to rebarrel a savage weather warrior 270 win to a long throated 284 win with a 1:8.5 brux so I'm trying to figure how much free bore i need for my reamer and how much mag room I will have to play with. I am going to give the 195 grain EOL a try, will use it for my goal of a 1k sod poodle.

Well, that should be a lot off fun. There is a lot of enjoyment to be had in doing the work yourself, i'm in the process of finishing off my first laminate stock. I had to finish the inletting for the action & trigger guard, glass & pillar bed (that was an experience), ensure the barrel was floated, do the final sanding of the outside, countersink the front action screw for an escutcheon, apply the finish & grind the recoil pad to fit....

No wonder stocks are so expensive... there's a LOT of work involved lol but it was fun.

You might consider doing a build thread to show your progress with the 284


The 195 is going to be a great bullet, but the 180's are probably going to be the best bet for the 284.

Sounds like a lot of work! My uncle made a laminate stock himself for his 22-250 and it looks awesome (he showed me how to reload).

I am having Nate from Straight Shot Gunsmithing do the work but i am just going to keep the factory accustock on it untill i have a little more money for a nice aftermarket one.

I ran the ballistics and the 195 at 2600 fps has 43.7" of wind drift at 1000 yards, and hits transonic velocity at 1770 yards.

The 180 at 2700 fps has 52.7" of wind drift at 1000 yards, and hits transonic velocity at 1550 yards. (Does the starting velocity seem right for both of these?)

I've not done a lot of research on the 284 but what little I have seen is the 180's in a properly set up rig will go 2800 or just over, you may (pure SWAG) get 2700 from the 195. You going to need more than a 24" barrel though, that iddy-biddy tube isn't going to get it.

The reason i want a short barrel is i want this gun to be a do it all gun. Where we elk hunted this year we did a TON of bushwacking so thats the reason for a shorter barrel, but i also want to be able to reach out to 600-700 yards if i have to. And the 168 grain LRX moving 2850 fps at 2800 ft above sea level should get me out to about 900 yards before i get below 1600 fps. At 7000 ft i should be at 1080 yards with 1600 fps. So much farther than i will ever attempt a shot on a big game animal with a 8-9 lb rifle.
