Well I just completed the move from FT Meade MD toFort Sam Houston TX. I have to say that I'm glad to be out of MD the hunting wasnt all that bad but I prefer a little more space. Anyway I have been doing my research for awhile and have spoken to a few people and it looks like the only way that I will really be able to hunt much is to hunt Fort Sam Houston. I dont think I can afford a lease down here at $3k per gun for that I might as well head out of state for a week. So if anyone is able to provide some advice on another option or where to look it is greatly appreciated. I do not want anyone honey hole or hot spot just looking for a place to fill the freezer. I knocked on some doors this weekend and to no surprise all of the owners were very nice but there land is leased. Any advice or suggestions on where to look?

Thanks in advance for the help

Fort Hood just North of You and Fort Bliss both offer some excellent hunting opportunities for active duty personnel.

YOU Can hunt on Camp Bullis, just north of San Antonio. You are active military so you should have no problem getting to hunt. At least a few year ago they let military hunt there.

Thank you both for the replies. I have been up to Hood and it is an option. I plan on heading out to Bullis this week to check it out I have spoken with the sportsman club over there and it sounds like a good option that is close. Thanks again for the recommendations.

There is no hunting on FT Sam as it's pretty much downtown San Antonio. There are several places to hunt around San Antonio, and Camp Bullis truly stinks due to over regulation. It's a waste of time. Ft. Hood is not worth the drive, there are plenty of opportunities around SA.

You don't need a lease. I've gotten some of my best hunting opportunities through friends and by contacting taxidermists in the area, they seem to hear about the deals first. There are a ton of exotic and whitetail ranches within an hour of SA. They are always looking to get rid of pigs too.

Contact Cory out in Castroville. He owns Keep It Real taxidermy off of Hwy 90 and he is in the know about all this stuff. Do a google search you'll be able to find him.

If all you're looking for is meat to fill the freezer, whitetail and axis does are available for a reasonable price most places.

Great thanks for the info. I figure this first year due to time constraints I will go for the fill the freezer option. I will take your advice and give that person a call. Do you live in the area still? Can you recommend any ranges to shoot at that allow some distance?

I appreciate the help thanks again

Give the guys at Larue a call, you'll find them very welcoming and can likely help you.

They're just up the road at Leander. It's a bit of a drive but I'm sure if you call them they can give you a list of some ranges that are closer.
