300 wsm

Ok so my 300 wsm is almost back from my smith and I am getting ready to develope a load for it. The barrel is a heavy contour 10 twist cut to 26". My question is I currently load 208 gr amaxs with h1000 for my 300 wm and was wondering if these will also work for the wsm. I am guessing the h1000 will work well but am unsure about the 208 gr. I know Berger 190s would be good but Bergers are so finicky to find a good load. Let me know what the pros think

I am no expert but I found the 190vld loaded close to the lands in my wsm to shoot so well I never even tried other seating depths. Load development with the VLDs was surprising painless and no other bullet has come close in my gun. Definitely try a box, do not rule them out they may surprise you..

H4831sc has shot very well for me with the 208's. H1000 may be a touch slow.

Yes I have been through about 100 of them so far with R17 groups are hanging at around moa. I stripped my reloading room down for a re model. I will have to get back to you with charge weights.

H1000 won't get you great results. You won't be able to get enough in the case for maximum performance.

IMR 7828ssc is my new favorite powder in the 300 WSM. It is about as good as I have found for the slow burners and the ES in my loads have been fantastic. I worked up a 210 Berger load with 7828ssc last week and I had six straight duplicating velocities with one particular powder charge. I thought maybe the chrono was spewing some foolishness until I went to the next powder charge and started getting very close but different velocity readings for each shot again. I have found 7828 to be insensitive to temps ranging from 25* to 80* in loads using the 210 VLD and the 230 Tactical.

I like 4831sc for the 200+ bullets too, but the speeds on 7828ssc have been a bit better. I use a standard CCI 200 in Norma brass for all my 300 WSM loads now.

I have worked up some good loads with RL17 and the 200 Accubond as well, but they got a bit squirrely in hot temps. Great hunting round though.

Great choice on going with the heavies in the 300 WSM, they really sing with the high BC bullets.

Do you guys think the 215m federal primers will work well. I have a couple thousand of them from other loads so It would be nice to just use those. Thanks for all the great advice keep it coming too.

I use federal 215m primers and h4350 with the 190 vlds. She is a tack driver.

Give them a try. For best potential results don't commit yourself to one type of primer just because you have a couple thousand. Try a few different primers and let your gun choose. If you find that the 215s work well enough, then run 'em. Primers aren't the magic potion to turn a crappy load into a miracle round, but if you need to shave an ES down to shrink your long range groups, a primer change may just be the answer.

I am running 67 grains with fed 210 match. I started at 64 grains and worked up. Try your 215's but you may find better velocity spreads with a large rifle primer. I am running the 208's at 2950.

It's doable. A drop tube would help with a bullet seated to the boat tail transition.

When I tried loading the 230 berger with H1000 in the 300 WSM, the charge I needed filled right to the base of the neck at 71.5 to 72.0 grains with a drop tube funnel. You could be talking a full 2 grains more powder for the 208. The Norma case will hold approximately 74.5 grains of H1000 filled to the top.
