Wow! That is a lot of sick or weak or old animals! Heads up Colorado, you are next. Of those animals on the list there was probably as many that they could not determine as "without a doubt" wolf kills.

I'd like to think that these are just the ones that had a wolf carcass to show for "proof".

What I wonder is what the 'kills' on domesticated animals and livestock are in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan. I know they have severely reduced the deer herd up there from what I've read.

Interestingly, supposedly reintroduced by the MDNR.

I was under the impression that there have always been wolves around the Great Lakes. Am I mistaken, or did they "introduce" the Canadian bastards like they did here in Yellowstone?

There were already some wolves here in the Western Rockies too, just not the same type they introduced.

From what I was told (fact or fiction notwithstanding), the wolves in the upper were eradicated but reintroduced by the MDNR and as a 'protected species'. The only way they can be killed is if they are a direct threat to livestock or domesticated dogs. I haven't hunted the upper but looking at the DNR-DMU maps, deer population in the upper, especially the western upper (Wisconsin side), shows the population at less than 20 per square mile. I have a good friend that lives in Baraga, Michigan near the Keewanaw Penninsula and he told me that hunting this year flat sucked.

Conversely, the DMU population maps show the population at 40 plus per square mile in the wesrern central lower (where we own wooded acreage) and I'll attest to that. Thicker than prarie dogs.... I shot one at 4 feet this season. I recorded it in the poll for longest shot, but shortest..... She almost bumped into me...... Clumsy deer. Shot her with my handgun .44 S&W at almost point blank range. Was hard to miss...

In the 70's I believe WI was cleaned out of wolves. We had a total of 20 or so animals, back in the very early 80's, that moved between MN and WI. So when the environmentalism wolf movement started they intended to help the wolves along by vaccinating them and moving them around the state to better habitat locations.
The DNR will flat out deny it was an introduction because they were already here, but they spent a metric **** ton of money to propagate the packs. From day one they were always refered to as "timber wolves" so I don't know if any were ever imported and they wouldn't admit it if they were.
