Tennessee Long Range Hunting

We don't have too many places here in Tennessee that we can get a 1000 yard shot so we have to improvise. Sometimes you can find a big hollow or maybe a river bottom farm. If all else fails you can find a long open path through some prime deer hunting woods. In Texas they call these senderos. Here in Tennessee we call them railroad tracks.

Wonder how many times you could ricochet a bullet between the rails?

The tracks have been decomissioned so the trains aren't a problem. As for the ricochets, I don't know. I haven't shot at the rails, only deer. I can tell you that a Swift 150 gr. Scirocco going 3325 FPS doesn't ricochet off a deer.

Oh, and in case any of you are wondering what that good looking rest is I'm using, it's my deer cart flipped upside down and propped up as high as it will go. I'm sitting in a director's chair. You have to be comfortable to sit there all day long.

and if u dont kill a deer, you can haul ur back pack and rifle back out on the cart!!!

LR hunters are funny. Most hunters try and get closer. LRers are always trying to get further away.lol

About ten minutes after that picture was made I let a 3 1/2 year 8 point cross the track without shooting him. He was only 200 yards away. Now if he had of been over 500 yards I would have taken the shot. There's no joy in chip shots any more.

Actually here in Texas we call those railroad tracks as well HA!

In your part of the world short of setting up on an actual road that probably is about the best LR opportunity you'll get though unless you can find a pipeline right of way.

But ya have to be carefull or you will hit the end. Dont know how far it is away..but if you look close you'll see the right and left side's come together forming a wall.! Its further on down from where the rails come together though....

As an old Tennessee boy myself I can relate. They took our tracks up 1966. I miss the train tracks, it was always good huntn. Now they have grown over.Old Indian trick put your ear to the track. LOL but not your tung when it is cold LOL. I use to have a 1000 yard field but now they put an interstate down the middle of it and cut ii in half.

I have sat on some decommissioned tracks in the NY adirondacks . 15 years ago there was a bunch of benchrest shooters who had a bench on the tracks and would shoot deer way out there with benchrest guns. Never actually saw them doing it but my father in law knew a few of them, he said they made some impressive shots.
