Stable powders

I have been using h-1000 in my 338 lapua and I like it, I was just wondering how temperature sensitive is h- 1000? would I see a big benefit since I shoot when its 0 degrees and when its 80 degrees by switching to a less sensitive powder? if so what do you guys reccomend?

H1000 is very temp stable

is there anything out there that is published saying what powders are stable or non stable? or a rating system of some sort? that would be really handy.

somebody out there hopefully will have better information, but generally the Hodgdon powders that are identified as the Extreme powders are stable.

H-1000 is one of the Extreme powders.

The hodgdon extreme powders are stable.
Another very good one is Ramshot Magnum

I think I read on here recently in the reloading section, that single based powders like H1000, Retumbo, H4350, etc are temp stable, where as ball powders or double based powders are more sensitive, ie reloder 22, etc. I believe alot of the IMR powders are single based as well, 4064, 4350, etc. Perhaps someone will correct me on this though.

of for rifles in there approximate burn rate from fast to slow.

H4198
H322
Benchmark
H4895
Varget
H4350
H4831 and H4831 SC
H1000
Retumbo
and H50BMG

These powders are the least sensitive to temperature as far as I know.

This does not make them the most accurate, just the most consistant in all temperatures
ranges.

That's right on!

To my knowledge none of them is more stable than H1000 with the exception
of perhaps Varget. I have used many pounds of Varget, H1000, Retumbo, H4350,
H4831 and they're all excellent. Not complaining!

What about the Ramshot Hunter, and (hodgdon) Superformance?
I shoot a 338WM in S.C. at 500' Ele., 90 to 100 Deg, H4350, Barnes MRX & TTSX 225s and no problem in CO at 9,000' in -10 deg.

I bought some Hunter because Barnes listed it in tests. Never loaded it yet. Know any good or bad on Hunter (what load)????

Also, just found out Nellie LOVES dirty barrel 'GMX 185 Superformance' ammo and it don't kick as much as 225gr pills (NO BRAKE)..
Any knowledge or rumors on Superformance with 9,500' & 100 degree temp swing for my Nov. ELK hunt in CO. this year???? We alreday proved that current 185 GMX setup on my Zeiss should hit 7 to 8 ins high on 500-600-700 & 800 yd "PINS". I don't know what to expect from the powder yet!!!!
Help please if you know or have heard anything ref. Superformance sensitive to temperature .

I guess I was just asking because...

If I develop my loads at 98F and then go hunting at 32F, I can plug all that data into my software. But, I noticed it doesn't adjust MV according to the temp that I input although it will adjust trajectory according to what you tell it about the air temp/altitude/pressure.

As such, there could easily be another 6" additional drop at 600yds due to 100 fps lower MV.

My point is that you shouldn't assume the software knows anything about the temp stability of your powder.

Hence, you should shoot your rifle in the conditions you will hunt and take copious notes for future reference.

I am very happy with Magnum & have started playing around with Hunter as well, but don't have any "good" data for you yet.

I did see you shoot the MRX (great bullet) & wanted to give you the heads up incase you haven't heard yet... Barnes has announced the discontinuation of the MRX, buy them up while you still can!

Yea.....like any thing I get to like they quit making it! "Can't have nothing". You can pack more powder in since MRX is shortest 185, 225 & 250 bullets in the world. I have the need for speed!

Found out about it last week......got 3 boxes yestedy....and 10 more coming tomorrow, now I'm broke. But, my grand kids, when they start hunting, won't have to pay a $100 per box tax for the non-swimmers (D) with their hands out!{:>(
I'm trying to go all Barnes MRX, TTSX and Horney GMX 185s.

Horney makes me mad about not releasing the GMX 185 bullets that I have had on back order from Cabelas for over a year. They dropped the GMX 225 without ever releasing their own Superformance version. Dont know if~n that means the 338 GMX 225gr was a failure or not, with the Superformance powder.

Please post up in this thread when you learn more about your Hunter and Superformance powders and I will also. Mine will be a year away at least.

The 185 GMX bullets will be going out to dealers in August. I had to buy 4 boxes of factory Superformance at $45 a box to prepare for my elk hunt in Oct. The factory ammo is shooting MOA out of my Savage. I still need to shoot it at 300+ yards to verify the lines on the scope.
