6.5 Remington Mag

Anyone on here have a rifle chambered for this round? I always wanted on and it seems like it would be a hell uv a long range round.

They are virtually identical ballistics wise to a 6.5x284, the 6.5 rem will hold 3/10s grain more powder but the 6.5x284 has a sharper shoulder. Both are good rounds and will give you great distance capabilities without stomping the **** out of you.

I have built several because they will fit in a short action and are almost the same as the 6.5 284
in a long action in performance.

They have a reputation for being in accurate in the Remington version but that was because of the
short barrel and vented rib that caused it to wander as it warmed up.

Replaced with a good 24 to 26" custom barrel they will shoot lights out like the 6.5 284.

With the short action and a light weight barrel #4 or #5 contour thew make great pack rifles
with more than enough power for Elk size game.

I have even though about moving the shoulder from 25o to 37.5o to see if I could increase the performance and brass life.

I agree if ptg or someone will make a reamer to get rid of the body taper and tighten the shoulder to 35* (probably 3-4 grain more capacity) I think it would be a better performer than a 264wm and have longer barrel life.

I've got a XR-100 in .22-250 that I'd like to re-bbl. I'm guessing that the bolt face would have to be opened to accept the magnum case head? If I do that I'd have all the metric Remington rounds: 6.5, 7, and 8mm Rem Mag.

A 260 Imp, 6.5x284, or 6.5-06 uses the same bolt face as you 22-250, if you want to use the 6.5 rem mag do it right and swap bolt bodies, and it might be complicated with the 7mm and nearly impossible with the 8mm on a short action!

Great round, but if you go with it, build it on a long action so you don't use up your case capacity by having to seat the bullets too deep. This was the problem with the original Rem. short actions.....Rich

I have rebarreled a couple of 300 win mags into 6.5 rem mags, 1 for me and then a friend wanted one.

Mine was a Browning BBR 300 win mag with a short detachable magazine so the closest I could load to the lands was .250" + (which irritates the hell out of me) so velocity was low for a 300 win mag. With the 6.5 rem mag I had the smith set the lands so I can seat those long 6.5 bullets way out there and it still fits the mag

On mine I put a Douglass XX barrel finished at 26" with a 1 in 8 with #4 contour. It has a McMillan stock and a Conquest 4.5x14x44 RapidZ 800

It will shoot almost anything well, generally 140 gr bullets at 3100 fps and 130 gr at 3200 fps. For the ballistic coefficient and to match the RapidZ 800 reticle I settled on 130 gr Scirrocco II's at 3200 fps with RL17

I've had a couple 264 win mags and both were a bitch to load for and problematic with dies and cases. The 6.5 rem mag has plenty of dies and brass is available, Remington but it is good with some work. The caliber is easy to load for. You don't need a super slow powder like the 264 win mag.

I built mine on a Savage model 12 300 wsm with a Shaw 26" varmit barrel.
In Okahoma our deer are only about 100 pounds dressed out
so I only use 85 and 100 grain premium bullets.
It is fast and very accurate.
