CZ 22lr questions

I use a CZ 452 22lr military trainer to take practice shots while barrels cool down, and to help fend off the magnum flinch, etc. I've been pretty impressed with what this thing will do at 100 & 150yds with just a cheap Nikon pro staff 3-9x BDC reticle on it. I was told that I should have bought the 452 Lux instead for these distances (the Lux has a 28in barrel while my Military trainer has a 24in, both are 1:16 twist. According to the CZ website) I'm usually holding 1 1/2in groups @ 100yds, or a little better if I bring my A game. I've been told by a couple guys that the Lux will bring em in a bit tighter, but I just don't believe it. If the powder is burned up at around 12in down the tube, is the extra length really going to help that much, with both being a 1:16 twist? I've heard that these guns are a bit picky ammo wise, I've been using the CCI Velosator and the CCI minimag HP (these are grouping best out of the few I've tried). Would "Wolf Target" or some other expensive "match grade" ammo be that much better, or should I just be happy to get what I'm getting for a $250.00 rifle? Any imput from anyone who has put a few rounds down either of these guns would be great. I realize that LRH may not be the best place for a 22lr thread, but it seems to me that we're the ones who are always shooting everything, and always at the range, and thus, I'm counting on you guys to know.

I have a LH 452 Lux and a good friend of mine has a 452 Ultra Lux. The longer barrel of the Ultra Lux comes into play primarily when shooting with open sights. It also seems to have an effect on the super duper high velocity rounds like the stinger and the Aguila Super Max. My friend's Ultra Lux is the only rifle I have ever seen that shoots stinger and Super Max ammo accurately.

Using a scope, there is no detectable difference in accuracy between the two guns. All .22's are finicky about ammo to one extent or another. I have never seen a rimfire rifle that did not show a distinct preference for one factory load or another. The CZ's, in my experience, tend to be less finicky than most.

Where match ammo is concerned, the only way to know is to try it. It is my understanding that subsonic ammo tends to be more accurate at the longer ranges because the bullet does not get buffeted when it goes from supersonic to subsonic. It is also my understanding that, for some reason, subsonic loads have less wind drift.

I have had very good performance from both CCI minimags and velocitors in my rifle. I have not, however, shot it much @ 100+ yards. I am set up to do that, but haven't done much of that yet.

One of the great things about the CZ rifles is that you get a lot of rifle for the money spent to buy one. You have to spend a lot more ($1000 and up) to find a rifle that will consistently outshoot a CZ. That being the case, some experimentation would seem to me to be worth the effort.

Thanks for the in put. I was hoping that someone had already done the foot work for me, I guess it'll give me a good excuse to spend some more time with it. I agree with you on the "alot of rifle for the $". I know a couple guys that were pretty unhappy that my little CZ (bought on a whim for no reason, save that it was 10% off) will easily keep up with their highly modded Rugers and Anshutz. I'll post what ever I find out on the ammo trials.
