Hi Guys i recently came across a cheap, as new Rem mlr in 338 lapua which i bought for the sole purpose of rebarreling as my 300 rum sendero was getting a little tired, but it just so happens that it(MLR) is a real shooter and now im not sure if rebarreling will be a big advantage?A trip to the range and the rifle was putting factory lapua ammo and handloads into .5 -.75inch @ 200m and the conditions were terrible(34 degrees C and gusting winds)!I guess my main concern is velocity loss (havent chrony'd any loads yet)because of the short barrel 25inch(i think). Is there a much bigger advantage to having a 28"-30" barrel?Do you think i will get better accuracy than this?thanks in advance.

The only thing that rifle needs is to be shot. A longer barrel would give a little more velocity, but why mess with a good thing. It should shoot better in no wind conditions. I'd just be happy I got a good one and go shoot the thing. I wish every factory rifle I purchased would shoot like that.

What would you re-barrel it to anyway??? with the 338Lapua it has a bolt face of .588"
Mabey a 338Lapua IMP ???

I would have kept it as a 338LM,it's just that i had read so many negatives about how the mlr's shoot i wasn't gonna bother with the factory barrel,i also had my heart set on shooting 300gr smk's.Do you think the shorter barrel would be up to it?I dont know how much velocity the 300gr need to be truly effective or should i stick to the 250's.

I shoot 300smk through mine and they do great. OAL is a little restricted due to mag length. I am getting 2650fps with 90.5gr of H1000. Is 100, to 150 fps worth another $400 to rebarrel if it's already shootin?
