Start talking .22, .20 or .17 calibers then you'll be in the ball park.....

Get a .243 Win. with a 1:8" twist barrel to shoot the 105 gr. bullets about 22" - 24" long. This should be all the medicine you need from 50 - 1000 yards.

Medium to heavy contour with a synthetic or fiberglass stock and a Leupold scope with target turrets to dial in the shot. Built on a Remington 700 action of course!

My advice is a light rifle in the same calibers 17,204, 223, 22-350, 243 depending on your situation. Are you going to be calling from improvised stands and have to carry the rifle, and normal shots 0-250yards. You can improve the distance with a heavier barrel etc. if you are primarily doing long range shooting and not having to carry the rifle for long distances. Another question, do you want to save the hide for resale? Then reloading is the way to go. In any event you will have some losses in determining what is the right bullet to use

I won't be having to carry the rifle far enough where a couple of pounds would make any great difference. Shots may be out to 300-400yds. At this time I am not looking to save the hides. I will be reloading for it. The 243 sounds like an interesting option - I could also use that for antelope.

I am thinking of a 243 or a 260 remington. Probably built on a savage 110 action with a shillen barrel, sss trigger, recoil lug, tactical bolt handle. Scope would be harder for me to decide on but I have a falcon menace ffp on the way that I hope I will like

I'd buy a Savage model 12 low profile in a fast twist for 60-70 gr bullets or the 243, I'm partial to the 22-250. Both will bust goats and coyote very well.
Then take the money I'd save on a stock savage, bed it and buy Nightforce glass, load and shoot.gun)

My god guys let the man build a rifle -then again there are a lot of great factory offerings.

243 would be great -i have a 25-06 and love it -6.5-284 would be cool -30-06AI shooting 110vmax or 125nbt's has crossed my mind. Uuhh yeah 260AI can't get much cooler than that.

I think a Sendero in 25-06 would make a great coyote rifle. I also think a Sendero in 300 RUM would make a great coyote rifle

Any of those cartrdges you listed would be cool.

fellow hunters, getting back to the original question while all the answers were good and for the most part partical, what is a good coyote rifle. Now we need to know for calling or long range i.e. in excess of 250yards, how far to carry if that is an issue, consider that a lot of shooting will or might be off hand, our fellow hunter is he looking for a build or off the shelf rifle to start with? Are tjere ptjer uses that like deer hunting that it will be used for? Does he have a budget that he has to stick with. These are some of the questions that I asked myself. From what I gather, he is interested in a good handling coyote caliber that can be used for deer hunting with a moderate budget to begin his quest. There are many answers and information to offer. Manufactured rifle in 243, 25 06, 260 or similar calibers. Since pelts are not an issue, perhaps a 308. Hope I haven't stepped on your good suggestions but summed things up for a fellow hunter. I have harvested deer out to 750-800yds. with this setup last year and smacked quite a few coyotes with it.

#5 or sendero contour(easier to shoot longer ranges with a heavier rifle)
stock with adjustable cheek piece.
my 6X47 is a little heavy but it makes spotting hits easy so no brake is nec. in my opinion

I like my LH Savage .223 for varmints etc. But I am still on search for one rifle for everything. I set up a LH Sav 270 that I thought might be it, but altho it only weighs 7.7 lbs in full dress I dont like the shorter 22" barrel. I like the .243 I saw tha twould match my wfies .243, but I wouldnt uses either for elk. A friend in Canuckistan is trying to sell me onthe merits of the 25.06 as a do all rifle and, doggone it, I'm thinking he may be on to something. I think a LH Rem 700 or Ruger 77 either or with 24" bbl would pretty well take care of all my needs. Maybe it's time to have a sale of my excess rifles again. Anyway good luck on your search.

My budget for the rifle would be around $2500.
My thoughts are:
Surgeon action
#4 contour fluted barrel - 24 to 2f"
Stock? Something with a high comb - don't like adjustable cheek pieces - any recommendations
. I'm open to laminated or synthetic.
Scopes - I would love a Nightforce 5.5x22 if I could swing it otherwise a Zeis with ballistic reticule.
I will check out ballistics on the calibers everyone has recommended. Would use the gun for varmits to antelope.
Rather tha spend money on a custom gun would it be best to buy a Remington Sendero 25-06 and get the Nightforce for sure?

I think I would go factory, maybe aftermarket stock if needed, just to make sure you could get the Nightforce. It sucks to have a gun that out shoots your optic, I'm currently in this boat.
For the cal. something that will shoot a heavy 22 cal or a 6mm maybe even 6.5 would be more alluring to me than a 25 cal. I shoot a 250AI and love it but if I had the dollars to do something I would lean to the better ballistics of the 6mm or 6.5.
