Howdy all !

I have a friend who is setting up a long range 338. He has a HS pro hunter in 338 rum that he is single loading with 300 smks over H 1000. He is running 94 grns out of a 26" barrel for 2802 fps. I think really fast out of that much barrel ?

Groups at 100 are inconsistant and sometimes tight to open the bolt.

He plans on dropping back to 92-93 grns. His OAL was 3.79 which is long and he thinks this could be giving pressure problems.

Do any of you load 300 smks in the 338 RUM ? If so what loads have worked for you ?

Thanks

That is a tough load for the 338 RUM !!!

For the 300gr SMKs I use H 869 and get 2750 but no pressure signs.

I use the 250gr Accubonds @ just over 3000 ft/sec and get great accuracy with a 26" tube.

The 300grain bullets benefit from more barrel (28" to 30") with slower powder.

In my "opinion" he is on the edge and should back off the load a little or change to a slower
powder.

Be safe

I use 103grs of H 869 for the 300 and 106grs H 869 for the 250gr accubond . These loads
may be to hot for your setup so start lower and work up.

COL is 3.8000" but that will be two long for most actions. (I built my 338 on a Weatherby MK 5
action) so I could increase COL and use up some of the free bore.

The Weatherby is 1/10 of an inch longer than a Remington and gives me a almost 6grs more
powder capacity with the bullet seated long.

I had very good accuracy @ 104grs with the 250gr AB and no pressure signs at all in my rifle.
