New optics for REM 700 SPS Tactical in 308

So, it is for real, I have to get a new scope (dad decided he wanted his redfield back).

I have narrowed it down to two choices:

Nikon Monarch 5-20x44 BDC

Sightron 6.5-20x50 Mil-Dot

Now, why these two you ask? I like the side-adjust parallax. Both I have good-great repeatablilty. 1/4" adjustments. Good size reticle, good cost. More important, my local gunsmith has them on his shelf.

I have not limited myself to these because that is what he has. I had already researched them, and he just happened to have them. That, and I know that by supporting local gunsmiths, I will have someone local to help me fix anything that may go wrong.

Nikon is of course cheaper, but I like the turrets on the sightron more. It has a bigger objective, and has mil-dot. I like the idea of BDC in Nikon, but I want the windage dots as well.

I am shooting to 600 yards for now (as that is as far as my local range goes) and am scouting safe places for up to 1000 yards (well, in that neighborhood) and will use this for whatever happens to come along. Deer, elk, paper, steel, whatever. I just want to reach out and touch something should the need arise.

I already have a Warne 20 MOA base with Warne rings. (just so happens to be 1")

I like to dial elevation and hold off windage. So if it was me, I'd go with the Sightron just because mil-dots give a more accurate reference for holding windage. Plus in a pinch you can use the mil-dots for ranging.

I would go with the new Sighton S3 in 6-24 with Mil dot and 100 MOA elevation.

Well, it has been determined.

I went and looked through them one last time and decided on the Sightron. The mil-dot is really what won it over. Both had great glass, smooth adjustment and reasonably priced.

Dealer knocked of $40 and I still have the $50 rebate to do. So just about $100 off is great.

Will let you know how it shoots Monday.

What is a WO TAC

I have a Sightron SII 6.5-20X50 MD mounted on a 700 Tactical. It has a nice wide field of view. The glass clarity is very close to the SIII. It's hard to tell a difference. There is plenty of eye relief even on 20X. It has 60 moa total adj which is very workable with a 20 moa base. It was able to get a little over 50 moa adj on the top, using a shim, after zeroed @ 100.

The turrets are much smaller than the SIII turrets and they packed 20 moa adj one revolution. That puts the clicks very close together and they are not audible. That's the only things I don't like about it. It's nice scope with very clear glass and a very good price with the $50 rebate offered by Sightron on the SII scopes.

The BC cap sizes are: 43 obj and 16 eye.

Yep, that is exactly what I ended up with.

I think this rifle will do what I want quite easily, now I just need to be able to shoot as good as it can.

I adjusted the trigger down to about 2-2.25 pounds (way softer than the 7 or 8 that it came with stock...)

W.O.Tac rifle scopes

That is the WO TAC from Sight Wonders.

I replaced to stock on mine with a HS Precision vertical grip stock and sold the Hogue stock. I also sold the X Mark trigger and replaced it with a Rifle Basix trigger adj to 1 lb. I haven't had a chance to shoot it.

The Sightron SII 6.5-20x50 is a very nice size for this rifle, not too large just right.

Well, I shot it today...

Now, having fired 1 (yes, a single round), it is fuzzy and out of focus. The glass is clear at 6.5 power, but adjusting it at all to a higher magnification throws it out of focus. Tried to adjust focus and parallax, but to NO avail at all.

I must say that I am pretty upset about this. I will call sightron tomorrow, but I have a shoot coming up very quickly and I need as much time to get used to it as possible. I might just have to return it and get another scope model...just hate to do it because the scope was highly recommended.

Sorry to hear about your Sightron but I can have a W.O. Tac to you in 3 days tops and I can guarantee you won't have any problems ! Where are you located?Will the 4-14 x 50 work gor you? This scope was designed just for the use you have described for your rifle .
