Looking for new 308 win

The heart of any rifle is the barrel. When you look at the competitors in BR mataches, Bartlein clearly dominates followed by Brux followed followed by Kreiger. I would focus on the barrel followed by the action. For the action, the easiest approach is probably a Remington 700 and get it trued. With the preceding approach, you stock options are many.
Remington 700 Police 308 very accurate..

Have you ever thought about finding an old action and building one? stock, barrel, and a little labor... and you have what you want. Oh, even though it's a shot action cartridge I'd look for a long action for it, it's a little better on bullet seating. just my 0.2, Cheers

I have seen some people suggest using a Remington 700 and I would assume they would suggest having it blueprinted and then adding in a custom barrel. Which is a great way to go, but compare the price for the action and blueprinting along with whatever else you would want done to the action to the cost of a Defiance, Zermatt, Bat, etc you may get an action with the same qualities already done with better value. Then look at what ever barrel you want and figure the cost of machine work to be done to it, and compare that to a pre-fit barrel for a custom action. You may find the pricing to be close. And may make your decision easier.

Maybe buy a prefit in the contour you want to make weight and just swap it out on the savage? Then you can always swap it back if you want.

Heavy sporter, 26", .685 at muzzle.
$374 for a stainless match......hard to beat.
Not a bad price on that and I've been looking at savage rifles a good bit lately seem to be real user friendly for shaping parta out on I have noticed alot of them are bottom bolt release and I don't know of many stocks made for them

For a factory rifle, I'd go with a Tikka, Howa, or Weatherby Vanguard. But if you're gonna build it, go with a Rem 700, or maybe a Savage 110. If you plan on shooting heavy, long bullets go with a 1/8 or 1/8.5 twist.

Samuel - As you can see there are so many options you can consider given the defined purpose of this rifle. You seem to be expanding your collection of rifles to cover your desired hunting and shooting purposes. That's a good thing. I don't think there is one perfect cartridge or rifle that covers all the bases. We are very fortunate today with regard to having good quality options in factory offerings. We also are fortunate to have countless excellent options for custom and semi-custom builds. It sounds like you are like many of us on this forum. That is we are constantly on the hunt for the next rifle that will satiate this desire to expand our options. Good luck with that…. My biggest constraint is the size of my bank account.

I would also only get a 1/10 twit barrel just in case if you want to shoot any heavies. A 1/10 will shoot all the others fine. For doing on a cheap platform I just bought a Howa rifle in a 26 inch 1/10 twist. It quite heavy and with the scope its at 12.5LBS. I cant think of the scope right now but it a heavy thing also. If I was doing it over again I would of gotten the Weatherby Vanguard. Generally theses are decent rifles for the price and the 308 have a 24 inch 1/10 twist. The scope is an Arkin 6x22 or 24. I forget but its a heavy thing. I would go with a vortex instead but its a FFP at 450 dollars so that's hard to beat. Anyways yes I wanted a 26 inch barrel for the extra speed but I'm not sure how much more I'm getting when compared to a 24inch. Currently shooting 210ABLR at 2525fps. They will go a little faster but this has been the best group and speed. My goal was to get 1000lbs of energy at 1000 yards. Currently getting that. So with the ABLR supposed to work at 1300FPS "supposed to" then deer are a doable thing at 1000 with a 308win. I think I could do an elk at 800yrds/1200+ft/lbs energy. Velocity at 1000 is supposed to be above 1500fps.

Honestly my stock 5R Remmy is a tack driver. All I did was add a Timney trigger and a Mark 4 Leupold. I would not change a thing. One of the best rifles I've ever owned.
